Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

More forum changes!

Unlike General Discussion being confused for Off-Topic, I'm sure most of you have seen people putting general Q&A stuff in EE's Questions and Answers forum. There's probably a few other changes we could make to clarify things, and I'm not entirely sure how to go about some of them.

  • The main thing is that Questions and Answers should have a name change to Game Q&A or something similar.

  • To go along with that, I'm not too sure about Forum Discussion's placement in the Feedback category along with Bug Reports and Game/Graphics Suggestions. The Feedback section is almost entirely about EE stuff but then there's Forum Discussion messing things up. And to make it worse, Forum Discussion also doubles as Forum Bug Reports and Forum Suggestions which has confused even more people than Questions and Answers has. Not sure what we'd do about that one, though.

  • I think we could probably at least split Forum Discussion into Forum Discussion and Forum Suggestions, but would we keep that in Feedback? Should we reorganize all the forums and categories?

  • Speaking of reorganizing categories, Game Discussion (the category, not the forum) is a little big. Groups, Level Creation, and Rooms could probably split off into their own category. Wasn't it that way before, anyway?

Re: More forum changes!

Questions and Answers should just be renamed to "Game Help" or something similar.

Game and Graphics Suggestions should be combined into "Game Suggestions".

Lastly, everything needs to be reordered.

Here is what I think each forum should look like:

OFFICIAL BUSINESS
  • Game Business

  • Forum Business

GAME DISCUSSION
  • Game Discussion

  • Game Suggestions

  • Game Help

  • Bug Reports

LEVEL CREATION
  • Level Creation

  • Rooms

  • Groups

  • Game Programming

OFF-TOPIC
  • Off-Topic Discussion

  • Forum Discussion

  • Creative

  • Forum Games

TOPIC GRAVEYARD
  • Topic Graveyard

I also think Topic Graveyard should be hidden so that only mods/admins can see it.

Re: More forum changes!

I am not opposed to any of this, although merging Game/Graphics Suggestions could complicate things very slightly. It wouldn't be as easy to find graphics topics. It wouldn't be hard, it just would be slightly less easy. People could still pick out graphics topics just from the titles.

Re: More forum changes!

This is why we need to encourage, and maybe even require, users to tag their posts.

Here are some random ideas:

[Graphics]
[Command]
[Physics]
[Block]
[Smiley]
[Bot]

EDIT: Maybe you can even have a place for tags that people can add to their post. It would look like little bubbles before a post title

Yes. There's tags in Bots & Programming, we should have tags everywhere else as well

This is a false statement.

Making subforums is a whole different can of worms that I'm not going to attempt. Not only would we have to add that not-insignificant feature into FluxBB, we would have to move tons of topics into those subforums.

Dazz wrote:

Not all of it, it hasn't. Like I said in the first post, the main thing I had in mind was changing the name of Questions and Answers since that is something that actually gets confused a lot.

And in any case, the forums haven't stayed the same for the past 5 years. We've got a new Bots and Programming forum and lost an Introductions forum in just the past year IIRC. It makes sense to at least reorganize after stuff like that, even if it's just reorganization and not something more severe like merging Graphics/Game Suggestions. As it stands, Game Discussion is significantly bigger than any other category of forum.

We're not just trying to change things for the sake of changing them, we're trying to improve them.

Creature wrote:

Right, and it'll probably stay that way. Splitting forums is a ton of work that tbh might never actually get 100% completed, so I'd rather not.

That red hurts my eyes, a little darker maybe?
Or a different color that isn't too bright.

Which one? The one that blinks at you or the one that just sits there?

The one that just sits there telling you not to double post.

Also, Frog, you know that is the same color that's in your signature text, right? One's just bolded.

Yeah, it flashes when the text box gets focus, so when you click a smiley or BBCode button or even just click out then back in, it'll flash again. I'll see what I can do about it only flashing once and the text below only appearing once the text box is given focus for the first time.

Re: More forum changes!

I think you should dull down the red color. It kind of hurts my eyes.
Also I don't think a flashing red color in the text box is necessary since most people can clearly see the "Double posting without adding new content to the topic is against the rules and will likely result in a warning."

I think everything's fine right now. Maybe dulling the red is okay if it bothers some people, but I think the flashing should stay.

The box doesn't flash on the Post reply page at all. The warning doesn't show up there, either.
