- It's not just X vs Y kind of brackets, it's multiple (like 10-20) ideas, and the bottom half are eliminated each time

I don't think the focus should be on selecting themes, the most voted theme shall be chosen in just 1 round.

- In ludum dare, the community votes, encouraging everyone to play other's entries

Pretty sure people will vote just on their friends or doesn't even vote.

theme voting would only take a couple of days, with a couple of strawpolls

i agree that voting for the winner wouldn't work with the ee community, but I think that maybe there could be two prizes? The "Winner" and the "People's Choice"?

Strawpolls doesn't work well, you can re-vote 1 day later. Unless it's just for 1 day, but again, I don't think the focus should be choosing the theme.

EDIT: I was thinking, maybe another EE contest could be run in the style of ludum dare

1. There is a signup/idea submission period
- This is when people suggest their ideas for a theme

2. There is a voting period, tournament style
- This is when the people that signed up vote for the theme they want to use
- It's not just X vs Y kind of brackets, it's multiple (like 10-20) ideas, and the bottom half are eliminated each time

3. There is a building period
- When the contestants build their levels on the theme that the community decided upon

4. There is a voting period
- In ludum dare, the community votes, encouraging everyone to play other's entries
- But it's only the people that submitted an entry, preventing voting abuse

5. There is a celebration/whinging period
- As is inevitable if you offer a prize

it should be much more simpler:

a contest similar to what pixeljoint has:

Monday: Contest Theme announced by past winner

Tuesday-Friday: Building/Submissions

Saturday-Sunday: Voting Period

Monday: Winners announced (1-3 Places), 1st Place decides next contest theme

and then repeat

We discussed having a community vote but the idea was quickly shut down because of the biased community. I'm confident that our judges will be fair (I even promise to be non-biased towards iPwner's submission!) and as for the theme, you can't please everyone but it's a theme that is easily adaptable to the categories we're judging.

For people who can't figure out what to do as far as gameplay, remember the motion that relates to both seasons. I think of summer as hot and fast paced and winter as cold and slow.

Take my ideas with a grain of salt. I just wanted to give people who said "the theme is bad for gameplay" some ideas. This is by no means the "correct" way to make a level.

As BEE said, the point is contrast.

I must say, at first I didn't completely agree with iPwners no room or creativity post, but now I definitely see where he's getting at. Half of the levels are basically snowy beaches and such, and the other half are just a picture split in two. Then again, not many submissions so far, so we will see.

There is potential for it to be creative, but many people choose to go for the easy, obvious option. Think about who you're up against in this contest. Without creativity, what do you have that can compete against them?
