Reading in Class

Today, in religious education class, I decided to read a book, because my teacher was just telling random religious stories, then suddenly a girl start complaining about me reading a book, thinking it's unfair I don't pay attention in the class, and then some other classmates started complaining I do it in other classes too. Note that I have good grades and I read when I finished everything or when there's nothing to do, also, my class is very talkative, and they still complain about it.

What do you think about reading in class? Does it cause a problem? Do you dislike seeing someone read?

I don't see a problem with that situation? You're not doing any work, nor does there seem to be any important discussion or anything. If anything, it's rude to complain that you're reading.
I don't see a problem with it, unless you're supposed to be doing something else.

Well you've described it as "telling random religious stories", however clearly it seems that those stories were deemed important, or at least something that will help you. The teacher was probably trying to, you know, teach.

If the teacher wants to do something about it that is their prerogative. Other students complaining about something that is probably pretty obvious to the teacher anyways is pretty stupid.

Well here it is illegal (pretty sure) for schools to force religion (or teach it) so I wouldn't know.

I can understand you bruh... Religious education is boring and even if someone tries to look somewhere else in my class, da teacher tells dat person to stand outside the class. Also, if dat person is "mischievous" in her opinion, she might even take them to see the principal.

What I dislike is teachers that waste my time. Its unacceptable for them to be put in a position of authority, where they literally determine my future, and then waste my time with packets and busywork. This happened so much in high school. My freshman biology teacher had a mental breakdown two years in a row, and had to be hospitalized and put on leave because she flipped out on students multiple times. Guess what? She was rehired. Teaching has become more about the teacher than the student. As long as the teacher meets all their requirements, who cares if the student learns anything?

That being said, I watched parks and rec every day during ap lit, because all we did was packets, and graduated with honors and a perfect score on the reading part of the SAT. I'm not bragging, I'm just saying that something is clearly wrong with the system if learning is not necessary for success.

THAT being said, if you are not doing anything in class, read a book dammit! At least a book is worth your while. However, if you have a teacher that is actually using his/her time effectively, you should listen up and appreciate what you have.

This is important to mention. I have had teachers in high school say they hate giving that work, yet they are basically required to do so. Teachers have so many quotas of making sure a certain number of students pass, or anything their higher ups set. They only do the busy work to raise the grade average, which is stupid anyway because there will always be people who refuse to do work. The issue I don't think is really the teachers, but the pressure they are put on to supply that kind of work. They could very possibly be required to do that to keep their job, I don't think many of them enjoy handing it out. That is what it was like here at least here, not sure everywhere else.

And books are awesome. If you are able to read in a class that isn't doing anything, that should not be frowned upon.

As I know you are atheist. Why do you stay in religion class anyways?
In some way it may be consider a disrespect for the teacher.
And maybe your colleges wan't to talk with you but instead you are in a parallel universe of the book.

Well in my country if your religion doesn't mach with the class you don't need to do it.
You may stay in class or play in the garden.
And you don't give exams for that class.

That is when the teacher is not good. Rare chances if there is a proper interview before they are taken. Especially in private schools like mine (no bad teachers here )

School isn't only for learning the stuff you learn at school. I've listenend to a podcast about this. The person that made it used to be a teacher & what he was saying sounded very right. He said that school is for learning to work, and to learn accept that you need to listen to the **** someone tells you if you need to. He said more but only this part is important for your post. So you need to listen to your teacher, but I would do the same I think. In my school we don't have much classical lessons, and if we have, they're never longer than 10 minutes. (that's probably the reason my English isn't perfect so sorry if I wrote something wrong)

I'm very certain that there is more literary value in religious stories than in all the Percy Jacksson stories combined, so I'd say you made the wrong decision.

What do you mean exactly by literary value? A good read? Morals and rules?
The teacher didn't seem to mind much, so could it be that wrong of a decision?
