Who said anything about hp? It's just reducing 1 from the death counter. And why do people think anything non-sandbox comes under the category of rpg?

There is no HP involved! It's simply reducing the total amount of deaths by one.
By doing so, players will be able to make worlds with an HP system or RPG; enhance the use of death doors.

Question: What happens when a new player with 0 deaths joins and touches a heart, do they get -1 deaths or does it stay at 0? Or will the death counter be replaced with a life counter?

You won't be able to 'catch' it until you have at least one death.

I see the death counter more as a statistic. You can't just undie.
True, but if this was added, it would augment the use of death doors/gates. If worlds want to use it as a statistic then they could just not have these 1-ups. I don't think its use will appear across most worlds, so you probably don't have to worry about it too much.

Personally, I'd prefer a straight reset over subtraction, but wouldn't complain about both. I definitely think we need something like this. I bought death doors when they first came out, but have no idea what to do with them. Right now, they are not the most puzzle friendly invention.

Wouldn't work, because the game wouldn't know which coin to mark uncollected to the user if the user has more than one coin.
Anyway, your idea is useless.
