Title says it all. Unlike respawn points, checkpoints can be used in minigames, and in the middle of the level. In addition, they do not reset your coin counter. They can be used to respawn a player when he hits a lethal block, or if he gets trapped.
Lethal blocks are basically blocks that you can't touch. Those might be lava blocks, acid blocks, etc.
BTW, only the room creator can put lethal blocks and checkpoints in the level, otherwise it would be overpowered.
