it's still unclear who can chat and read chat messages

If somebody chats, all I see is:

These people who're chatting to me - it happens constantly - do not know that I cannot chat and cannot read their chat messages. Even if they know that the brighter names mean "has chat", they still don't know I can't read what they write. Man, I've written this so many times already. It's a real pain. How can people possibly know that the brighter color means "has chat". Even I thought for months that it means these people have beta.

There is a very simple solution. Chris, please add some descriptive text to the side pane. Here's an example:

I know that you think the gray and white colors are intuitive; that people will understand it means whether or not others can write and read chat messages, but even hardcore players still have no idea who have and do not have chat abilities - and even if they do, they do not understand that those without can't read the chat messages. (Which isn't weird, especially since things used to be different. Those players without chat abilities could read chat messages back in the days.)

Maybe they where talking to someone else but they where standing at your side?

No, I've had it many, many times with just me and just one other player in an area where nobody else was. I can check the minimap to see if others are near us. If it's not too crowded, I can even count the number of players in the list, to make sure I'm not overlooking ninja smileys. Before reading my post, did you know that those without chat abilities can't read what you write?

Near you? Nobody has to be near them for them to be talking to them. You could be at opposite ends of the room and still talk. Now, if you're the only 2 in there then they are taunting you.

its already marked out like that, the ppl in the normal white have chat and the
ppl in the grey are non chat
