Plot Twist

A short story I have written

       Although he had a perfect alibi, and committing the crime was impossible for two reasons, the letter he left at the scene proves his guilt. The handwriting was not at all close to his, but we all know he was probably forced to write it, resulting in a messy writestyle looking like someone else's. No one would write a letter admitting to a crime when they had a perfect alibi. Upon arrest he denied all knowledge of the crime and letter - more support for our theory. He was found ten hours away from the crime scene minutes after its committing, but the overwhelming evidence against him says otherwise. There must be some trick to explain this contradiction.

       He was released for some reason. It seems the complete disappearance of the local junkyard's stockpiles of waste material is considered paranormal by the majority's standards. However, I have been dispatched to follow the suspect and arrest him upon any questionable behavior. Here I sit at the corner of the store's patio, watching as he approaches his car. Thoughtlessly he places his beverage atop the vehicle as he plants groceries in the rough seat across the driver's. He enters, shuts the door, and off he drives! The liquid contained within the glossy plastic topples over onto the frigid pavement. I rush over immediately and arrest him for littering. He appears frustrated over his act's discovery - but he should know better than to throw trash at nature.

       After being served food while serving two year's time in prison, he has been released. I find it a very merciful sentence. I've again been sent to watch over his suspicious activities, and soon enough, he is caught! Leaving a small market I spy him trimming his toenails, but leaves them in plain sight on the nearby lawn. These horrendous biological waste shreds corrupt the ineffable beauty of the weeds and toxic waste drums. I call to him and arrest him on the spot. He is flabbergasted that his evil deed had been spotted with such ease after being so immaculately plotted. Evidently he had not foreseen my presence.

       A bit more appropriate sentence of eight years has been given this time, I am sure he regrets his atrocious acts by now. As I predicted, he makes no malicious mistakes. The next day I am surprised to find that I was actually the one who stole the junkyard's waste this whole decade. A letter had been found with a writestyle not similar to mine in which a confession is made to forging the subsequent letter and being the sole perpetrator in the horrid crime. Of course I wished to argue, but knowing that the one who is guilty would argue, I knew I must be guilty. I accepted the evidence and was sentenced to two years in prison, it would have been more if not for my honestly in writing the letter.
Update:

       I told some of what I had done, and all the cell members agreed that I must have been the culprit, very reassuring to my trust in the legitimacy of this conclusion. Noteworthy is their surprise in a law enforcement officer such as I, committing a heinous crime. However unlikely it is, the evidence is surely proof of my guilt. Nearly a year into my sentence, a third letter has been discovered telling of the lies both of the earlier letters have told. All know it could not have been me, as I was in prison during this time. Shortly after my release I am met by the previous suspect who admits to writing the two most recent letters, but not the earliest. He says we were both innocent, and the he believes the earlier letter was indeed an attempt to frame him, and not by me. According to the earlier suspect, he made the second letter out of frustration and anger over my actions, but came to forgive me, resulting in the creation of the third. This was very surprising to me, but I could perfectly understand all of it.

       We have planned to meet today at an underground mansion he tells he inherited. We meet there, and after activating several mild defense mechanisms, he leads me to a tenebrous room encased with diamond plated walls. The previous suspect knows of some information that we could use to find the location of the actual perpetrator. He hands me some not at all tattered files - relatively crisp, allowing me the task of researching the new suspect's identity, while he looks into possible video evidence of the crime.

       I head to the computer tower at the next day's start. As I search for the information, I find it peculiar that the information is so easy to come by, the address, the name, and any sort of other information comes up immediately when I search the world person database. I take a bit more time to organize all the information and print it out neatly. We have arranged to meet again tomorrow.

       Upon my arrival at his mansion's entrance, I am let in through the ominous front doors and head down the staircase whorl. I give him the information I gathered, at which he is uplifted and quickly tells me he found actual video evidence of the crime. I am told to turn in the information and video evidence, and that he will wait in this room. I am sure he has some sort of important matter to attend to, one important enough to miss a decade long case's end.

       I arrive at the police station and hand the the folders and video over to the captain. He plays the videos, and to my surprise it is the suspect! The initial suspect who I had just previously been working with. The information matches with him too. We head over to the location of his current residence and apprehend him. He denies all knowledge of the video tapes or even working with me. He is sentenced to another two years in prison.

I don't understand why he was given a 3 year sentence to prison and then an 8 year one, just for littering.

Also for me the sudden confession seemed abrupt.

the society is supposed to be absurd, though the lengthy sentence is also due to the stealing of the junkyard.

Also, I will tell you that the narrator did not commit the crime, and neither did the first suspect.

I have written more for this and plan to add it sometime.

This seems very, very dystopian. I was about to make that my whole post when I noticed this: 'the society is supposed to be absurd'

And I was right. It is a short story in a dystopian world, one where all morals are extremely twisted. Maybe this world is that that is twisted and not the story...
