Can Someone tell me how to set up a Minecraft server?

I've been trying to make one for me and my friend but I fail at this kind of stuff. (I've read the guides)

Can someone teach me how to?

Few questions:
What is the easiest way to do this?
Do I need to to get my IP?
And Is there a way to make it so the level saves when me and my friend get off and want to continue later on?\
EDIT: as you can tell Im clueless when it comes to this stuff.

Hamachi gives you free server IP's.

That's probably the best way. I've made one myself, so I might be able to answer any questions you have.

- There's a small guide on minepedia but it's being attacked by bots atm so I can't link that
- Open port 25565 on your router/modem
- Launch

Yes. Hamachi is the program that gives you the IP, lets you turn the server on or off whenever you please and see who's online.

Download the unmanaged version.

it's honestly pretty easy. Just download the server software, set it up, google 'what is my ip', get your ip, hand it out. It'll probably be pretty laggy though.

YES.

Good thing I'm still on these forums after quitting EE. I've also been trying to find out how to do this. The Minecraft Wiki made it sound so.. Complicated.
