Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

You don't think the background of a word should influence it's usage or meaning? At all?

If the background is still relevant to when the word is said, sure.   In this case in particular?   No.   I don't think the majority use the word gay to refer to homosexuality, even if they did, we're not talking about that case.   We're talking about gay being used as "stupid" and other similar things.

Re: Fruitmonster's rant.

Yeah, I suppose your'e right. But I'd suggest waiting a little while to ensure that there's absolutely no hinting at homosexuality whatsoever to claim it as non-offensive. A little while, meaning, until homosexual people are very rarely referred to as "gay", which I don't expect to be any time soon.

Same word, bad background, I don't think we can call it non-offensive just yet. In a few years, when about 9/10 usages are meant to represent "stupid", I'd call it unoffensive. I still hear people refer to themselves and other people as "gay" meaning homosexual (non-offensively) quite often.

There's not talking to you Twipply. I have my own opinions and your not a know it all. I don't care what the Oxford dictionary says I think it's wrong.

There are no wrong opinions. So that makes you wrong that I'm wrong. So you don't know everything, end of story.

Re: Fruitmonster's rant.

Question 1 for you: WHY do you care if other people call inanimate objects gay? Why not focus on the word "slow" which, when used as an insult ACTUALLY would be insulting because the users are NOT changing the definition..

IF they change the definition of the word "gay" to mean lame stupid etc then I don't understand why you care..

Consider for a moment that someone far more intelligent than you is bashing you over the head, and the Oxford dictionary is on his side, along with a few other wonderful forum members.   We're already aware that your opinions aren't of worth, so stop repeating that mindlessly.   As for wrong opinions, you can go read the WDYToMaaFM? topic.

Far more worthy of the attention, I agree.

Re: Fruitmonster's rant.

What I think Failgirl is trying to say, is, opinions are 100% correct to the person that has them, but can be 100% wrong to everyone else.

It's her opinion that Oxford dictionary's definition of "Gay" is wrong, so to her she is 100% right. To you, she is 100% wrong.

It's probably not best to be confined to your own opinions, but it's still fine.

The most logical answers in life are not always the best answers. Leading a good life isn't necessarily about following rules it's about becoming the kind of person you want to be, and thinking independently. The oxford dictionary is mere words. It has not experienced what is is like to grow up. The dictionary is based on logic and not reason. Sure, it may say "Gay" means foolish, but in my opinion it does not. The dictionary makes it statement of what one person thinks not what everyone thinks.

I think it is okay to follow your feelings if you know you are doing or saying the right thing. And if you mess up you learn. If we did not make mistakes then we would not learn and that wouldn't be any fun now would it? //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/smile

Counter example: "I want to be a serial killer! It's not right, but my feelings say it is."
