Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Swearing

Most of you know me -- I don't swear. It's frowned upon, and it's also a law not to swear in public areas.

But why?

I've put serious thought into this question, and cannot think of a reasonable answer other than "Swearing is wrong because society says it's wrong and you must obey them."

[21:32:48] Kamietsu: ?@TakoMan02? Society is a collective of people who all think similarly. Society veiws it as rude because lots of epople view it as such.

We can approve swearing more than we can disprove it. See;

Reasons to Approve Swearing:
Relieves pain
Relieves stress
Helps build teamwork

Reasons to Disprove Swearing:
There are more efficient word to use (which is not always the case).

Should swearing be disproved or encouraged? Back yourself up with something other than opinions, for the love of god.

I remember watching an episode of mythbusters where they tested if this was really true, and they concluded that yelling any random word, such as "blueberry", or "purple elephant" had the same effect.

Re: Swearing

Although most of us try to act more sophisticated on this forum, let's be honest, we all swear excessively in real life. Why do we do it? Well, most people would say because it relieves stress, but, honestly, I think it's really just image. I would list some similar examples, but they're not exactly... appropriate.

I see no reason why swearing should be "disproved" (wrong word, Tako), or encouraged, either. Is there really any reason why "crap" can't be used as commonly as "blueberry"? Some might say it's inappropriate for the children, but, in that case, why is it? Basically, society answers this question with "because." There is no reasonable answer.

Re: Swearing

Swearing is "bad", because it is associated with being "angry", and similar "bad" feelings.

People don't want their kids to act in this "bad" behaviour, because younger people don't really understand what is appropriate and what isn't. They could possibly think that being "bad" or "angry" all the time is ok, which it is not.

I remember watching an episode of mythbusters where they tested if this was really true, and they concluded that yelling any random word, such as "blueberry", or "purple elephant" had the same effect.

Actually, swearing had a better effect:

Discovery Recap wrote:

They did this test a bit differently using themselves and the build team as subjects and testing them against themselves. For the first test they had to yell out ordinary, non-swear words with their hands immersed in the freezing bath. Adam had the best batch of words yelling out, ?puppies?, ?kittens?, and ?baby hippo?. Next they repeated the experiment yelling out curse words. Surprisingly it seemed to work. The subjects increased their time in the ice by 30% when they swore.

I don't mind swearing, as long as they're random words and not words that would specifically hurt some people. For example, here in The Netherlands, some people have the habit of using "cancer" as a swear word, now that's just a no-go. Words like the F-word are fine imo.

In general, swearing just sends out a message to one's peers and shows what kind of **** someone can be. If you want to be frowned upon because you can't contain your vocabulary, go for it! It's just social workings going at it, social Darwinism //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/tongue

In England, hardly anyone doesn't swear, it just gets to the point where it becomes a habit...
I don't understand what the big deal is, to me its just a bunch of words which seem to have a bad meaning
But what annoys me is, for example, when I walk and I step on a plug, it's my automatic reaction to shout the 'f word', yet people still tell me off for it, I don't understand... why is this? It's not like I was offending anyone with that word... I'd understand if I was calling something with a swear but if I get injured? I don't get it.

Re: Swearing

In my country(Crotia) swearing has also became a habit. People cant stop using it in a sentence. Like "Jebem ti mater"(f your mom),"Jebi se"(f you),"Pizda si"(your   a vagi..). Even I started to use it usually.People dont actually mind here.

Re: Swearing

I do swear under my breath a lot, which I think helps more than saying "What an idiot" or "That's so freaking stupid". //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/tongue

My parents have always used swear words around me, even as young as 4 and I've never minded it - I knew better than to swear like that at my age. Also, if I get really ticked off I tend to grab paper and swear all over it. It's kind of like stress relief.

Of course my parents know not to swear around people that don't like it; we have some neighbors that despise the use of any sort of swearing. //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/tongue
Why a lot of people don't like cussing... Well, I'd have to say it's because they think it's uncivilized, inappropriate and indicates a sign of having little or no manners. While that's usually not the case, it certainly can be.

Re: Swearing

So then why is it in COPPA, and most importantly why is it a rule on this forum (other than the fact it's in COPPA)?

Re: Swearing

Weather I swear or not depends on who I'm talking to and what the situation is. For instance, I'm not the sort of person to say "That was **** good." Also I'm not likely to swear if I'm talking to my Mum, Dad, Granny, etc. It's not they dom't like me to, it's just it seems pointless. However, I will swear if I hurt myself, for instance I once accidently dropped a brick on my foot and I swore quite loud. I'm not going to swear everytimes I hurt myself though. If it's just small pain, or pain that I don't realise straight away (i.e. I once put my fore-head in a bunsen burner and didn't realise untill a few minutes after I removed my fore-head and there was a big burn on it). However, if someone is being annoying, I'll porbablly swear at them them, but not nessasrally get angry (i.e. 'What the **** is wrong with out?') But overall, I don't just swear for the sake of it.

Re: Swearing

I tend to swear frequently when I'm bold. Swearing doesn't ALWAYS have to be looked down upon.
For example, dropping a weight on your toe and saying "F***".

If it's not hurting you in any way then screw off with your swearing-is-a-no-no policy arguments.

Re: Swearing

Swear words have same meaning as other words and we say those. The only reason I disapprove of swear words is because stupid kids can't use them right, definition-wise. I also hate those people who say it in every sentence. It's just a word people.

ITT: Everyone's go-to swear.
I call the word that gets filtered to crap!

I think swearing as alright, though. Tako, there's really no facts to base our opinions on, here. I say as long as you're not directing it towards someone in particular in a bad way and your company is appropriate, it's perfectly fine. Don't say it while others who shouldn't say it are present, though.

Sailors. Shall I tell the story? I think I shall.

You're on a boat. You're a sailor, and I'm the captain.

Me: Raise the sails.
You: Ok.

-Next day-
Me: Raise the sails.
You: Ok.

-Next day-
Me: Raise the sails.
You: Ok.

This gets boring, and you become slow to doing your chores. Now, I need to make you speed up. I can't punish you, because that's just mean and unnecessary. Instead, I'll throw some colorful words in there to get your attention and heighten the need.

-3 months later-
Me: RAISE THE ****ING SAILS YOU **********ING *****!
You: AYE AYE, CAPTAIN!

Understand now? That's why they used to call it "sailor's mouth" when you cursed.
