Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Science Project (Be smart for a +rep!)

Alright, I have a science project due tomorrow and I've gotten absolutely nowhere with it.

The project is, to make a device of sorts that will prevent an egg from breaking once dropped from the ceiling. The device must attach to the egg, not the ground, and prevent chips, cracks, leakage, anything. You may use: paper, glue (or any other adhesive), and the material eggs come in, the egg carton.

My first attempt was a cone-shaped model, in which aerodynamics would force it to fall nose-down and the hollow tip would absorb the impact. Sounds pretty good, doesn't it?

110904-113622.jpg

Instead of the nose absorbing the impact, it slipped and sent all the force to the side of the egg, and the side of the egg is the easiest to break.

My second attempt was something similar, except smaller and sturdier. That failed as well, because nothing absorbed the impact.

I am now experimenting with a tripod-type model; but if that too fails then what should I do? My mom is getting angry at me using up so many eggs (6 so far >_>) and it's due tomorrow. Once I have a working model I also need to take measurements and take pictures and draw pictures of it, etc etc, so I'm sort of short on time.

And before you say I shouldn't have procrastinated, I've been working on it for the last week, experimenting with eggs and how they break, etc etc.

Anyone that gives me a successful model idea will get a +rep for being smart and helpful. Drawings might help if you can't describe it fully.

Yeah, well, you know that's just like, uh, your opinion, man.

First of all You should wrap the egg up in a few layers of paper and glue it so that it cant come of, then you make a box that looks something like this 2qw1q8m.png
Then glue the paper on the egg to the top of the box like in the picture and fill the rest of the box with even more paper, dont know if this will work but it's all I can think of at this moment //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/tongue

And then, put it into the carton box of the egg.

Boxes are for LOSERS.

The weight of the egg would make the box flip completely over in mid-air and receive all the impact.

Lol, seem a weird thing to learn.. But yeah. Can't you use paper mache?

Uh, don't you need water to make that?

I made a glider thing that keeps 2 marshmellows in a small plastic cup. Try a glider thing that glides in 1 direction?

Eggs are too heavy to be supported by a paper glider.

Meh, true, why can't you just use a water based adhesive, xD

Even if I could, what could I make out of paper-mache? It's not very easy to mold by hand.

Well there is no point discussing it if you can't.

Make an eggshaped box which you fill with paper to cushion the fall and then in the middle of it put the egg thats the last thing Í can think of cause it's late and I cant test it myself

Sounds good, I'll test that one next.

The egg is has 6 egg carton cones around the egg sides which is then covered by paper

But are You allowed to use all kinds of paper?

I would guess normal paper

I just thought that there are some papers that are thicker and weigh more which could be used

Re: Science Project (Be smart for a +rep!)

I remember doing this in seventh grade. Someone just wrapped their egg in a single sheet of paper and it survived. Someone else built a makeshift parachute and their egg didn't. It depends on the egg. If you have a chance, find a really strong egg.

I remember that my egg survived, but I don't remember the design. If I were you, I would forget about aerodynamics and just focus on cushioning the egg. I'd cut a piece of egg carton off and use that as an outer shell. Between the egg and the carton would be tissue paper.

I would think that the egg would land carton-side down because of gravity.

PARACHUTE!
Use the paper for the parachute, cut the eggbox in half (Where the fold is) so you have 2 seperate but identical pieces, glue the end of the eggbox to the end of the paper, same with the other side. Glue the other ends of the eggbox's together to make a hold. It should be safe.

I'll try to upload the blueprint ASAP.

Edit: Here it is!

I know it's terrible but it's rushed, and only a blueprint anyway //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/tongue

You need to make it the least aerodynamic you possible can. This makes it fall down slower and less of an impact when it collides with the ground.

I wish I did this in seventh. Instead, I'm doing it in AP Physics so now I have to calculate various formulas to determine maximum acceleration, speed, force of impact, and other unnecessary numbers.

It's an egg. Falling from the ceiling. Catching that in itself is merely a miracle, but no, they want even more out of you.
