Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Question relating to my computer

(I know there's a Computer Problems thread; this isn't a problem.)
I have Windows XP Professional on one of my computers. I'm thinking of installing Slackware Linux on it, but I don't have an XP installation disk. Is there any way to make one?

Re: Question relating to my computer

This is not my first experience with Linux. And I need an XP disk because I'm installing Slackware, not Ubuntu, since this is a fairly old computer, with only 512 MB of RAM and 40 GB of disk space. So I don't really want anything that'll be too graphical, although XP is (imo) one of the most stable non-UNIX OSs, even if it has many graphics.
Anyways, I have 3 computers. One is my normal computer and has Win7 on it, the one I'm using right now has XP, and I have another with only 128 MB of RAM that's running FreeBSD.

So, I ask again. Can you make a reinstall disk for XP without buying the original OS disk for $250?

YES. but you can only use it on the original mother bored. It is not $250 more like $100. you do not need a XP disk to install it. nor do you need xp pro. xp home is the same thing but with less networking settings and software. If you are trying to dual boot then it would be pointless to do so on that computer. XP will run like crap on it. If you are trying to network boot then win 7 or your xp would do it. all you would need is some software from Micro$oft that you can get for free.   If you are this advanced you should know this. I was trying to HELP! If you give more info on what you are doing i would of been able to help you. but since your a derp   i will not .
GOOD DAY SIR!

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear enough; I meant to ask if there was a way to make a reinstall disk for free.

I don't understand that first part; idk what you're talking about. Please be more clear. And I know that XP Pro has networking settings; I LOVE that about it. That might just be my favorite part about it! So there's no way that I'm installing Home Edition.

If you are trying to dual boot then it would be pointless to do so on that computer. XP will run like crap on it.

First off, I thought I made that clear. I know that I don't want to dual boot, but that's just because I'd need something like Partition Magic to do so with Slackware.

If you are trying to network boot then win 7 or your xp would do it. all you would need is some software from Micro$oft that you can get for free. If you are this advanced you should know this.

I'm not trying to network boot, I'm trying to install Linux. I don't know how much clearer I can make that! And although I do like Windows 7, I can't install it on the computer. It needs a minimum of 1 GB of RAM. So if you are as advanced as you seem to be implying, you should know that!

I was trying to HELP! If you give more info on what you are doing i would of been able to help you. but since your a derp   i will not .

Ummm... I get that you were trying to help. I was actually quite happy that you were trying; you were the only reply. And now, you seem to be raging. I wasn't being a derp at all! If anybody is being a derp here, it's you! You're overreacting. I did absolutely nothing wrong. And anybody other than toothwort who reads this thread, please -rep me if I was being rude. Seriously! I'd like to know if I deserved being insulted.

Re: Question relating to my computer

first off you came across as rude. i will explan.

So, I ask again

when you say "so, i ask again" you show a lot of arrogance. it also shows that you demand an answer at this moment. and that makes you look like a derp.

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear enough; I meant to ask if there was a way to make a reinstall disk for free.

yes and no.

I don't understand that first part; idk what you're talking about. Please be more clear.

I'm thinking of installing Slackware Linux on it, but I don't have an XP installation disk.

why do you need a copy of xp to install linux? you do not need a copy of xp to install slackware. do you need it to make a partion? no. go to this site and look for this
"5.2. Partitioning a hard disk"
http://www.linuxpackages.net/howto/slac … ation.html

First off, I thought I made that clear. I know that I don't want to dual boot, but that's just because I'd need something like Partition Magic to do so with Slackware.

i was saying that to referenced the need to have a copy of xp. you dont need Partition Magic.
look here http://download.cnet.com/EaseUS-Partiti … 63346.html

I'm not trying to network boot, I'm trying to install Linux. I don't know how much clearer I can make that! And although I do like Windows 7, I can't install it on the computer. It needs a minimum of 1 GB of RAM. So if you are as advanced as you seem to be implying, you should know that!

i was saying you can install it via a network. i know your trying to install linux. i was not saying install win 7. i was saying you can use it to do a net work install. i am that advanced and you obviously miss understood me!

so here you go im not sure you will be able to do this because you gave me no info on what you are trying to do. but here it goes.

you will need to look for this "C:I386 not C:windows\system32\I386"
the I386 file has to be in root directory. not in a sub directory C: is root. C:filename is a sub directory.
if you have that go here
http://www.howtohaven.com/system/create … disk.shtml
you will also need your product key look on the computer or you can go to the registry to find it
to find your key go here
http://www.petri.co.il/quickly_retrieve … cd_key.htm
downlode the program if you cant find the key on your case

if you want to wipe the HDD you will not be able to use a system restore disk it only has the files to replace or restore cretin files and not all of them, like an install disk. at that point you would have to buy a OEM copy of XP or you can try to ghost or clone your hdd.

go here for clone
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disk_cloning
here to ghost
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQuzu4r_Sww

good luck. if non of this helped then i would recommend you buy xp home and mod the system registry to work like xp pro. or you can buy pro.

Re: Question relating to my computer

Thanks for trying to help; I didn't really think that asking again was arrogant. That certainly wasn't the intention.
And also, you asked why I need XP to install Linux: I don't actually need it. I just love XP as an OS, and so I wanted to be able to fall back on it, in case I decided to.

I'm sorry, but I don't think that's enough to hold 2 OSes. It's hardly enough to hold Win7. If you had thought of it earlier, you'd have been able to buy a HDD or SSD (Which is a bit extreme for your purposes) for cheaper.

Stupid Taiwanese people being too busy drowning to make my hard drives...
I just realized that the above statement could be interpreted as racist or something for whatever reason. Highlight the line above this if you dare. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Re: Question relating to my computer

Every XP OS (or Win7 etc.) has a product key. If a friend of you has the disk you can use it. You just need to keep the product key. If you want you can borrow the disk or look in the internet how to copy a XP disk. This is NOT illegal unless you get a free product key because without Product key you can use your OS only 30 days. So look how to, it is NOT illegal.

Hope this helped.

Re: Question relating to my computer

Yup, ik it's legal. I was just wondering if there was a feature in XP (like system restore, or backup) that lets you make an installation disk w/o product key.
