Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Cheese

I have a knife and a cheese, I have to cut the cheese into eight pieces. I can only cut straight lines and only the knife can be used to cut the cheese. Nothing else can harm it. What is the least amount of cuts that I need to make this possible. And the cheese can be in any form you want. Round, square, even heartshaped.

I know that the answer to this is one, but I don't know how to make the cut correctly. I know that the answer is not logical, and I still can't figure it out. If someone has any ideas on how this can be done, please let me know //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/smile

Re: Cheese

3 Cuts.

As a whole, cut it horizontally and vertically. This leaves 4 pieces.

Stack all the pieces onto 1 pile and cut the whole pile in half.

That leaves us with 8 Pieces.

Re: Cheese

There's another way to get it into eight pieces with three cuts. But what I need to do is do it with one cut.

The answer isn't logical so you have to think out of the box.

Well, you only have one knife, there is some way to do it. I promise.

The cheese has holes in! the middle is the only place without the holes touching andis really thin, small than a knife... you know where im going now... you cut down directly in the middle!

I never knew you could cut another knife without extreme velocity and power... :O

Re: Cheese

An E shape with 7 horizontal lines, cut along side the spine which seperates the cheese into 8 pieces.

Re: Cheese

First cut it into half, you get 2 pieces.
Then put one of the half on another one and cut it again, you get 2^2 = 4 pieces,
Do it again, you get 2^3 = 8 pieces.

Note: Our cuts are parallel, if you want them not to be parallel, we would use the formula (n^2+n+2)/2 for that which in case, gives us a   7.

Note2: Or, give the cheese to your mother, she will probably know how to do it.

Note3: Now, the answer i gave was for R^2 plane, if you want a R^3 space, the answer would be different since you need to count the depth too. If you want the cuts not to be parallel, you need to use
n^3+5n+6/6=8
n^3+5n =42
n^3 +5n -42 = 0
Now use discriminant to find the roots of the equation, I am too lazy to do that.

For if we can do parallel cuts, i will come up with a   better answer tomorrow maybe...

I love all the random smiley faces... especcially because I turned them off... they're stupid.

anyway, my answer is a knife shaped differently.

or of course... the cheese was never there.

or... I got an apple slicer cutting apples into 8 pieces I think, should work on cheese aswell.

basically, there is no cheese.
it may sound cheesy to you, but I ran out of things to say...
cheese.

Is it something silly like this? Red line is the cut (get a big knife).

Dunno where you'd get cheese like that from.

I think Musukis is the one that would work the best, but Twipplys was good as well.

I don't think that counts as one cut... Lemme try again

Oh yeah, straight lines...

Then I'm going to go with BorkD's idea with the knife. The knife splits into 7 different knives at the top, making you only need to use 1 slice.

There is no "work best", there's just right and wrong.   Both work equally as well because they're both right, and as far as I can tell, the only right answers so far.

Edit:
If you're trying to relate these to how realistic they are in real life, then I'd actually suggest that mine was the most reasonable.   The horizontal parts of the E shape can easily be replaced by a surface of the cheese being wavey.   Cut along the 'waves' so you get the main portion and the 7 waves seperated.

Re: Cheese

Well yeah yours were the most realistic one as it is impossible to bend a cheese like Musukis without breaking it. Making your solution the only working one of those two.

But the answer he was looking for was the one Musuki gave me.

There are a few other ways that you can apply your idea to, like this for an example.

Re: Cheese

I don't think choosing a ready-made shape that cuts into 8 is very 'overcomplicated'. Also, I may be mistaken, but I don't think your folding method will even end up with 8 pieces. Let me know if I'm wrong.

Guys, you're all noobs. Just take a regular square, fold it in half, fold it in half again, fold it in half once more, then cut it in half. 8 pieces.

You're so overcomplicated.

I think I'm going soft in my old age.   I wanted so very much to rip you apart, I even wrote a lengthy post with diagrams, but I shall refrain from doing so.

Your answer is wrong.   Don't believe me?   Grab some paper and your safety scissors and try it out for yourself, you get 9 pieces instead of the required 8.   To save your idea, you probably want to create a flattened cylinder by attaching two opposite sides of your square together.   You can then fold in half over and over as required.   As for the two right answers in this thread so far, neither of them are complex.   Both of them are very similar to each other, and also very similar to an extended W shape created by simply folding backwards and forwards repeatedly.

In the future, I suggest not talking down to those who are your intellectual superiors, as it will almost certainly not end well for you.

Any post of length that I make goes through a dozen revisions beforehand, so what you get here was only my first draft.   I think I'll stop this kind of thing soon though.   They may amuse me and maybe a few other people, but after every one I have to wonder if there's now a very sad person sat on the other end of the internet with a knife to their already scarred wrist.   I made one a few days ago that I think resulted in the whole thread being deleted, which is probably a nice high to quit on.

Edit:
Actually, why don't I just PM you it?
