Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Olympics during Ramadan.

So, in London, for the 2012 Olympics, the Olympic Committee has decided to have the Games during the Islam month of Ramadan, when Muslims cannot eat from dusk 'till dawn. That seems quite unfair to me.

Discuss.

Re: Olympics during Ramadan.

Those two events are completely unrelated.

Damn people today take too much offense from damn religion.

EDIT: I have Muslim friends. They have no problem with it.

I don't see how that's unfair at all.

Actually...

The Muslim contenders couldn't eat or drink during the games.

However I believe just like the rules about eating pork, they are allowed to skip them.

Did you read my post at all? I said that they can't eat during sunlight.

EDIT: Btw, it would very much so help to eat.

Oh, I see how it's unfair now. I was thinking more for spectators than actual people competing. They really should change the time they do this, otherwise they'll have an unfair disadvantage.

Glad you see now. //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/smile

ANd ThuggishPrune: I know this won't offend Muslims who don't compete, but the ones who do...

It's a personal choice. I can't see how it is unfair. They are committed to a religion that prohibits them to eat, it's their own mistake.

So it's their own mistake believing one thing they love? I take that as you see their religion as wrong.

Agreed, especially since in Arab countries virtually everyone is Muslim.

It can actually. Or they could make it earlier. There are a ton of really good Arab runners...

Cool, there are also a lot more other athletes who dont want to wait. No one is going to stop for them, their religion their choice. Shouldnt religion go before sport? So that means its more important to miss the event?

Time to choose what they love more. Religion is a hindrance once again.

I'm sure starving yourself for a month has more serious consequences than not being able to long jump.

Mistake or choice, I will not judge if it actually is a mistake or not. They could love another thing.

Yes, I see their religion as wrong, since I'm a lutheran christian.

Re: Olympics during Ramadan.

No one has to wait, they could make the Olympics before that! If you were,   say, the best long jumper in the world, and you wanted to play in the Olympics, wouldn't you like to be able to eat? What if I said you couldn't eat unless you changed religions, even though you were deeply religous or deeply nonbelieving? Would you change your religion? (Athiests, you would be forced to believe, per say, before anyone mentions that...)

If I decided that I only want to run with my eyes closed, is the olympics unfair to me?   They could quite easily make everyone else run with their eyes closed, too.

That would be true, but what if you didn't have to run with your eyes closed a month earlier? It wouldn't give anyone an advantage, everyone would have the same amount of time to prepare, and everyone could run with their eyes open.

Nowhere does he say that he has to keep his eyes closed; similarly, participating in Ramadan is a choice.

But what if you decide that you will keep your eyes open a month earlier? It doesn't hurt anyone.
