Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Mega Millions

The only thing I learned today in school was that the Mega Millions (USA) are now over $640 million dollars, the highest the lottery has ever gone in the US. (Note that it is significantly less after taxes)

What would you do with the money? (Don't even try though, the odds are 1 in 21 billion...)

My opinion:

First, I'd completely max out one Alienware Laptop, everything as high as it could be without ruining it, and then I'd do the same with an Alienware desktop. (Alienware ftw)

I guess I'd donate a couple hundred million to charity.

Put a ton in savings.

Give a ton to friends and family.

Umm....other stuff. (I don't need no cool house!)

Re: Mega Millions

I'd put a lot of it in savings, in a bunch of different banks, then I'd go buy a few things that would probably be under $1k and then I'd probably donate about a million to charity.
And at least 500 to Solia.
I don't even know what I'd do with $640, let alone that many millions.

Re: Mega Millions

Even if you're a millionaire you'd be stupid to buy Alienware.

About the money: get me a nice house and car, then just finish writing my dissertation, then go on holidays for a while and see what happens.

I disagree, you can max out things to an insane degree on Alienwares.

I'd donate to multiple charities, buy a nice car, upgrade my house, buy season tickets for my favorite sports team, and enjoy life!

That's the only thing you learned?   Sad.   They say US education is bad....
Also, it's only less after taxes ($462 mil) if you take it all at once.   If you do the smart thing, and get annual payouts for 26 years, you get the full $640,000,000.

(Don't even try though, the odds are 1 in 21 billion...)

Actually, it's 1 in 176 million.   Significantly better.

What would you do with the money?

Put 200k aside for a great college, save the rest.   Eventually get a mini-mansion in California and set up trust funds for my future kids.

First, I'd completely max out one Alienware Laptop, everything as high as it could be without ruining it, and then I'd do the same with an Alienware desktop. (Alienware ftw)

Yeah, but I'd much rather have a couple of Razer Blades.

I guess I'd donate a couple hundred million to charity.

Which charity(ies)?

Put a ton in savings.

Smart.

Give a ton to friends and family.

Dumb.   Never tell ANYONE that you won.   Not friends, not family.   Sooner or later, they'll come to you for a handout.   Just tell them "Hey, I recently came into a good amount of money, enough to live comfortably on, and I wanted to help you out a little."   Just like pay off their house or car or something simple.

Umm....other stuff. (I don't need no cool house!)

But you DO need English lessons.

Re: Mega Millions

You NEVER tell anyone you won. That's the most important thing. You WILL be flooded by desperate mail and you've also made yourself a target for theft. I've heard stories about how winning the lottery has ruined lives.

But let's say that no one cared you won and/or knew you won for the sake of fantasy. And taxes. No taxes.

I'd spend a good three thousand on TF2 hats. Yes, it sounds sad, but putting money into TF2 items is usually safe in that you can resell for what you bought for. And I like hats.

More than half of the money would be donated to all sorts of charities. Mostly charities that do something tangible with the money as opposed to research foundations.

Some money I would try to get into circulation within my community. Not exactly sure how I'd go about doing that, but I want to keep some of my wealth local.

A good chunk of the money I would spend travelling all around the world (first class!).

Some money would be left for my hypothetical future children.

Several million would be left in reserve.

Not sure about the rest.

@Orton:

Lol, no, I actually just had tests in basically every class. Other classes we just went over stuff. So I didn't learn anything new. I learn tons of stuff in my school, just not today, so I decided to put that phrase in. I also agree with getting an annuity instead. More money + you can't waste it all at once.
The sites said 176 mil, but I determined it through this formula: 56x55x54x53x52x46.
Razorblade looks cool. I'd still rather have an Alienware though.
Dunno. Red Cross maybe. I'd decide after.
I disagree with not telling anyone, just for personal reasons. I think that would be immoral, but it doesn't matter.
You don't get references, do you? Does the phrase "We don't need no" strike a bell? Hint hint! It's from one of the most popular albums of all time.

Re: Mega Millions

I'd get things I want, then put the rest of the money in a vault that I would hire architects to build for me, this vault would be hidden somewhere deep in some cave and have keys to unlock it, these keys would be scattered all over the world and the money to be locked away until someone finds it...

Re: Mega Millions

x, I got the reference, it was a joke.

Also, random fact, the 640+ million is the highest jackpot not just in the US, but in any country.   EVER.   Whoever wins...well, let's just say they win life.

I'm pretty sure this ensures that no one will ever buy Google.

They could fail life after they lost all that money of they spent it all. They'd be epic failures if they failed life after winning life.

I don't see how not telling people you won the lottery would be immoral, moreover for your personal safety.

Withholding the truth is almost as bad as lying to me. "Do you promise to tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth?"

SO HELP YOU GOD?

But isn't that for, you know, courtrooms and junk?

So if you don't do your homework, your teacher asks why you don't have it, would you say, 'oh, you know, I was feeling way too lazy and decided not to waste time doing your piece of crap homework because I have better things to do.' or would you just say, 'oh, I ['forgot'] didn't do it.'

That's just nonsensical, in my opinion, but I lie on the fly so... (Usually I lie about stupid stuff for fun, like telling my mom that my dad called me something mean and that I don't like any guys at the moment and that dolphins are fish, not mammals despite the fact that my dad was joking, I like plenty of guys, and I know dolphins are actually insects sent from mars to destroy us all).

Although, I suppose forgetting to mention that x thing of consequence happened is pretty bad if say, someone died.
Wouldn't it be easier to just keep the story short and not go into excruciating detail as to not withhold the truth?
Saying 'I'm cheating on you' is a lot simpler than saying 'I'm cheating on you with your famous younger brother who is somewhat responsible for your ex-wife's death because he's just so damn irresistable even though he's pretty much hated by the entire town and is also responsible for your father's heart attack.'
On topic, I'm not one for buying big, nice, items. They're overly conspicious, it's a good way to get killed, and taxes. Imagine having taxes on a huge-**** mansion, three ferarris, a yachet, and a bunch of other junk you don't really need.
Imagine running out of money due to taxes. Can you say 'OH crap'? Then you lose all of it, and then you have no money, no job, etc.
So I'd pay off my nice, albeit incredibly small house, buy a nice car - but not something like a ferarri, and then maybe a new computer and... oh jeez, I just thought of what I'd buy.
I would buy books. I'd buy a goddamn library. And it would be amazing.
I'd also travel the world, buy a nice camera, and a new pair of shoes. But I wouldn't buy any outragously expensive items, just small things that seem fairly expensive right now.
