Well, I'm in South America, but it find it okay for people in the US to call themselves 'Americans', but it's just not cool bro when they say they're the only Americans.

That's one of the reasons why there are words 'estadunidense' (sounds stupid but makes a bit of sense in Portuguese) and 'norte-americano' (there's Canada and Mexico in North America too, so that's a bit hypocrite) in Latin languages.

But it's okay, at least in Portuguese (not sure if in Spanish), to call someone from the U.S. 'americano', however it's frowned upon to call the U.S themselves 'América'. And using the word for American to refer to the continent is rarely seen, most of the times it's either 'latino-americano', 'da América Central" or "norte-americano" (like I said up there).

Edit: Wow, that Amerigo-America thing is the stupidest thing I've ever seen. Unless he only wanted to make the lands down there that he didn't discover, aka Latin America, less known.
