The only thing I can think of that could happen is a meteorite/asteroid crashing causing either tsunami, earth getting destroyed, etc. which is very unlikely. The chances of that happening are lower than an earthquake happening where you live and you dying. I hardly doubt there will be end of the world on that particular day.

The sad thing is that this isn't even a prediction the Mayans made. The Mayans had to stop working on the calendar because the civilization was dying, and the calendar had to stop on a specific day, there is no fading out. One day the guy who was working on it was told that he was urgently needed to help cure a disease with all the other scientists, so he dropped what he was doing because writing out a calendar centuries in the future wasn't very important. However they failed and all died and so the calendar was left like that. Naturally, the immediate idea people got from seeing that they left the calendar is that the world would explode. Because apparently some ancient chumps magically know what's going to happen on a cosmic scale centuries in the future, while our scientists who have chilled on the moon, made nuclear bombs and created vehicles that us win a race against sound know absolutely nothing about what's going to happen in a month even though the Earth has been around for 5.5 billion(I might be off) years and nothing bad has happened.

TLDR: The Mayans never said anything about the world ending and people give them way too much credit for being smart.

Also another piece of knowledge the word Apocalypse originally meant the end of an age, not the end of the world, so when Queen Victoria died it was an Apocalypse because it was the end of the Victorian era.

I think the idea is that they don't want to see everything they know being destroyed, people dying, their family dying etc. so they end it before it happens. Granted, this is stupid, but I can sorta understand why. Oh well, have some Darwin Awards.

A quick look at the news makes me wish that the world ends right now.
Anyway, from what I saw at a magazine, it was an almost-erased writing in a rock somewhere in Latin America that made people believe this. Also, it meant that something will fall from the sky (not exactly the end) or/and there's gonna be a new cycle, not an end. But I don't believe this myself, anyways.

If there is going to be 2013, I dare everyone go on youtube, search up all the videos on 2012 the world ending and type a comment saying: "Thumbs up if you're watching this in 2013." I bet you these videos will be filled with those comments.
