Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

What's Protecting Your Computer?

So I thought that this might be an interesting topic. What programs do you trust to protect your computer as you surf the web?

As for me I currently use:
Antivirus: Avira
Firewall: Comodo
Anti-malware: Malwarebytes
Anti-spyware: Spybot - Search & Destroy

I used to use McAfee, but found that it took up a ton of room and was more trouble than it was worth (price included). Everything I use is free and haven't had any problems since installing. Ironically I got a virus after uninstalling McAfee and procrastinating to install something else. It was an annoying one, but I just found where it was on my computer and threw it in the recycle bin.
Anyone have any tales of how Norton or McAfee saved your life or screwed you over? Or maybe you just live on the edge with nothing?

Process access control: SELinux
Firewalll: Whichever firewall ships with Fedora. It was the same with Mint so I'd have to assume it's a GNU utility or something.

I'm no Mac OS expert, but I think there is something protecting it, but it's hidden on the hard drive. That may be why it's so impervious.

Yeah, well, you know that's just like, uh, your opinion, man.

Re: What's Protecting Your Computer?

Since I'm on vacation and the PC I'm using isn't mine, this is my home's computer.

Antivirus: AVG (had avast!, however it 'broke' - stopped to atualize)
Firewall: Windows 7 default (not even sure if it's working)

There's no antivirus, but since 10.8 version we have Gatekeeper that track apps you install.

Tako, most mac users are cocky and don't have antivirus because they think that their macs are impervious, just because most viruses are encoded for Windows, what I don't get is if people think macs cant get viruses why not Linux?

Windows 8's new Windows Defender, and Chrome's built-in web page blocker. Works perfectly fine. //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/smile

Linux doesn't get much malware. It targets Windows by calling itself an EXE file, and Linux uses .jars and .debs instead. At least, I think that's how it works.

.jars are java archives, and they generally package all class files required for a particular thing to run. .debs are debian packages and are used to package precompiled binary files and other necessary things. Linux executable files are generally binary and most (those in /usr/bin/) have no file extension.

Windows Defender on Windows 8 = MSE
If that doesn't work, I remove it myself and then report it to the MMPC.

Firewall: Windows Firewall

If you guys are running Windows XP, you really should get a new computer because XP stops getting updates in 2014, less than a year. (XP's been out for 12 years, you've had that long to upgrade your computer.) There's a tutorial of Windows 8 on YouTube (search for Windows 8 Tutorial).

If you have Vista (Also old) or 7, you can download free security right from Microsoft (Developers of Windows) called Microsoft Security Essentials.

If you have Windows 8, you can just use the built in Windows Defender.
