Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?
You are not logged in.
Well, I have my own computer.
And even if you don't have a own one, you can play games without your parents know that. Every heard of private tab? And if you press F11 the tab bar disappears, just switch to Club Penguin and press F11 when your parents come in.
And think: How many players have the fan smiley? And how many players don't have chat?
Alright, for some (like me) the verifying doesn't work, and some parents are too lazy to enable chat, but there still would be many of mails, and you know how lazy Chris is.
This. +1 rep for you!
I don't see my rep :O
Anyway as you see that is not going to work.
Chris can't even be sure the parents of the child wrote it.
I want chat! My parents just dont let me buy anything from the internet,,, I want at least beta but colecting free gems it's goddamn hard!

Hmmm.. i told this and on other topic
No I meant this is exactly the problem I have.
There is an easy way to get past the 1cent system: buy a prepaid credit card. you can get them at best buy. So what im saying is the 1cent system is not very good...
133 wrote:I'm 20, yet I do not have a personal credit card or PayPal account, while there are many people under 18 who do.
So you can guess I'm not very fond of this system.
I'l give it a shot:
Ask for the birth date first. If the person is under 15 (or whatever age you want it to be), they'll have to enable chat with the 1 cent method. If they say they're older, give a simple mathematical equation that should be common sense for people over 15, but which looks like gibberish to kids. If they can't solve it, they'll have to enable with the 1 cent method again.
This isn't really the same as a simple quiz, as the answer is impossible to look up on the internet. And to be able to solve it, they'd need to learn the basics first. Also, make clear on the page with the equation it's to verify age / enable chat, in case they ask the parents to solve it.
Regarding the quiz, I am constantly amazed at how clever our children here are and as soon a puzzle has been solved by one, everyone will know the answer.
If you are above 18 and have this issue, you are more than welcome to send me an email at chris at everybodyedits.com with some form of documentation and I will give to you for free.
Soif we have this problem we will get chat for free
Because i have this problem,

Here's an idea:
everyone stops replying and Chris deletes the topic.
seriously, though.
There's no other sensible solution than what's already abroad(there). We'd need a chat filter with a complicated code to censor bad words etc. And who knows how long it'd take to fix all and any loopholes players find. So please stop making suggestions, nothing's going to work. Chris, if you're reading this, just don't do anything.
Trust me, he won't even if he doesn't read this.
(I swear, if you're working on something secretly....)
Maybe just disable any kind of chat age limit?
Seriously. Search the whole web.
I haven't seen any on-line game that restricts kids under age 18 to chat.
And limiting chat to 18+ is kinda... Well I don't know many 18+ people who play EE. Maybe 2-3 but no more..
ANYWAYS, most of the EE users are 8+ because only kids 8+ know how to control the keyboard good -
And won't ragequit in the middle of the tutorial level.
So allowing kids 8+ to chat is pretty fine IMO.
It's not your fault they curse, it's their parents' fault.
And for those of you people who say "But what if an idiot sent an F-Bomb and a 8 y/o saw it"..
I say, so what? Anyway the kids already know most of the wrong words from TV and their friends.
The most case (and also against fluids), you can give the level owners an option to mute players and/or perma-ban.
Look at most of the on-line games (mainly first person shooter).
If you curse, the users can vote kick you, not only the admin (what if he's away?)
Do it here too.
Kicked because stupid idiots voted to kick you for no reason?
It won't happen because you'll have to play at least 7 days to make a vote / to be a beta (help me here, what's better?)
A player fluids with kick votes? Limit kicking votes for 3 minutes.
A kid curses, another player that played 7 days / payed for beta, votes him for using curses.
5 players voted yes. If it's 5-0 until the vote is done, say goodbye kiddo.
But if it's 5-9 until the vote is done, congratulations, you're saved.
If it's 5-4 you can say goodbye either.
If it's 1-0 nothing happens,
If it's 2-0 you're kicked.
If it happens, your chat is disabled for 1 minutes, then 5 minutes and so on.
Why like this and not an auto system?
Because people use bad words as an habit, you can't make them break it.
You don't to be kicked just because you said "Damn, this key troll can't stop!"
Right?

@iYam,
Wow that might just be the solution to all our problems. Best chat fix I have seen.

Thanks a lot!
But yeah, the current system is fine expect that it KEEPS PEOPLE AWAY FROM JOINING THE GAME.
I'm 13 y/o. My parents payed for me. But what if I want to invite my friend to the game?
Well we are 13 y/o. He doesn't have a credit card so he'll have to ask his parents.
They won't allow him this because they'll think "they will take my credit card details" (OLD CLICHÉ!)
So my friend and I won't be able to chat together, and nobody will be there to help him when he's stuck. (Yes, I know we could use TinyChat. But c'mon)
In this case my friend will leave the game in half a day 'cause he thinks it's stupid (it's because he is noob).
So Chris are you happy now? You don't even get your money 'cause of PayPal's fed, so why? You only lose users like that :/

Oh, yes, this is a great point. I've been using AIM since I was about 10, too.
Perhaps, a warning system, you swear three times and you lose chat ability for a minimal amount of time, the progresses in length. That way the punishment is focused on the swearers. The warnings expire after 24 hours, and would work something like this:
1. Warning the first time.
2. Second warning(perhaps taking away energy, or slowing it until the warning goes away?)
3. Banned from chat for 30 minutes.
4. Banned from chat for 1 hour.
5. banned from chat for 5 hours
6. Banned from chat for 1 day.
7. Banned from chat for 3 days.
8. Banned from chat for 1 week. And, only one warning would expire a day, so if i swear 4 times(with some delay for temporary chat bans), the next day it still counts as if I have 3 swears.
You'd have to add any variations of the words for this system to work, including spaced out swears(l i k e t h i s), and typos.
As much as I don't like censorship, this idea seems to be a reasonable alternative to the 1cent system at the moment, as it's relocating the punishment to the people committing the act that is unwanted.
That's a bit like the Parental Control on Platform Racing 2 (http://jiggmin.com/games/platform-racing-2), exept they don't have auto-bans, if you recruited moderators with some kind of online form it would mean there wouldn't be any ban glitches (e.g. the system banning someone for no reason) because the moderators would deal with it. The only downside about it is that people are bound to find a hack, cheat, or glitch to make them become a moderator. This would probably be the best system, but it would definately mean you'd need a lot more sufisticated hack protection.
...Anyways, my idea: Everyone gets to chat for free, and anyone who swears, curses etc. gets banned from chat. Once their ban is over they have to pay 1-15¢ to be able to chat again. This would mean people being nice in chat would not have to pay anything, whereas people being horrible in chat would have to pay!

This is a good idea
Hey i just thought of a great way to resolve this issue! make a profanity filter that is optional! if you want to turn it on, go to some option place and turn it on :/ if people are getting around it, take a screenie and report! simple. if profanity doesn't bother anyone in the room, so be it.
second part of this plan, encouraging reporting. there should be a report system with certain consequences for different things. people could report profanity and wrong things. and there should be a staff of people reviewing these reports and banning and stuff.

genuis idea: allow someone with a face book account (and allow someone to connect a facebook account to a non facebook account) to have chat. if the facebook account is deleted or he has no facebook account, he must spend 1 cent for chat.
1) it must not be possible to keep it secret from parents.
parents will find out about a facebook account eventually, and then will delete it if they do not like chatting.
2) it must rely on a secure method of verifying age.
you have to be 13 to make a facebook account, and if somebody lies, someone (like a parent) can delete the account.
3)cheating must be impossible.
if someone makes an account and states his age as under 13, the child can not sign up again for a month, and the impatient child will likely give up.
4) it must work with both the free and beta versions.
making a facebook account is free.
5) most appropriate people must be able to acquire chat.
if someone does not want to make a facebook account, he can pay 1$ USD, then have it secretly refunded ( if they know it will be refunded, they might think it is still a scam).
6) it must not be possible for a person to spam chat to everyone.
a facebook account can only work for 1 EE account, and takes one week for the paypal refund to occur.
eww facebook? i made one only for the purpose of a summer algebra 2 class

there will still be a one cent option.
off topic: why did you make a facebook account for algebra?

Make a facebook account your mom doesnt know about with fake name and say you are 13 or over... and presto, your plan is screwed up...
Hmm... I like it the way it is right now, not too much abuse happens right now. the chat is very clean, thats one of the reasons i love this game... And i see smaller people who use shared accs use much more bad words than the bigger kids... I like it the was it is, i dont want it to change.
I have never thought of programming for reputation and honor. What I have in my heart must come out. That is the reason why I code.

thing such as crap are thought of as cursing by about 3% of the population. And it's very unlikely that any of that 3% are on EE. Also not being able to use god mode is ridiculous! I can understand using the chatting ability for a certain amount of time but no god mode!?

Chris i need talk to you can you delete my account oooooooooooooooo
dont delete Legoking can yo udelete my account name: oooooooooooooooo
on the everybody edits (
why legoking?
This is rediculous.
No, not the suggestions, the suggesting.
I can't believe you people are still thinking ideas of how to fix the chat problem when you know Chris is never going to change it.
I think the best ideas are either give everyone chat because not everyone is a noob, or just keep it that way it is.
