Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Have you even used guided chat before billyp? It's nearly impossible to get a point across, and it's just plain lame. Ever played one of the many games with chat that give you an option to got to a guided chat world and a normal world where chat is enabled. I still stick with the point system, and we just need a few more mods monitoring all the rooms. There should be rooms like kong though.
Yeah I s'pose they do suck, but it would allow all members to chat to eachother.
@klmaster, if it was put in the game Chris would have to put more buttons on and perfect the design
I think guied chat would be the best option, but if it is brought in will that silly 1c 'tax' be removed?
im thinking just tell them to type in the credit card number for $0.00 for chat
ID? im under 18 so i dont know how that works
yeah i dont have a lot of very good ideas but its something
also for commands for non chatters make a seperate "command box"

So you can guess I'm not very fond of this system.
I'l give it a shot:
Ask for the birth date first. If the person is under 15 (or whatever age you want it to be), they'll have to enable chat with the 1 cent method. If they say they're older, give a simple mathematical equation that should be common sense for people over 15, but which looks like gibberish to kids. If they can't solve it, they'll have to enable with the 1 cent method again.
This isn't really the same as a simple quiz, as the answer is impossible to look up on the internet. And to be able to solve it, they'd need to learn the basics first. Also, make clear on the page with the equation it's to verify age / enable chat, in case they ask the parents to solve it.
Regarding the quiz, I am constantly amazed at how clever our children here are and as soon a puzzle has been solved by one, everyone will know the answer.
If you are above 18 and have this issue, you are more than welcome to send me an email at chris at everybodyedits.com with some form of documentation and I will give to you for free.
make multiple questions randomly appearing to random people!
I have an idea that won't necessarily solve the chat problem entirely, but will still make a difference. I have emailed Chris about this but not sure if he'll reply so anyway...
It's called Simple Chat and it's for anyone who doesn't have normal chat, so that people who do have chat can communicate with people who don't.
If you take a look at the rough picture:
http://oi52.tinypic.com/16c53zq.jpg
It shows a set of options on the right of the screen. Chris/RPGMaster or whoever can adapt this, but for the moment it's okay for this explanation. Anyway, simple chat users will get a limited choice of things to say to normal chat users and other simple chat users. Normal chat users can use simple chat to write back to Simple Chat users because Simple Chat users can only see messages sent using Simple Chat. This is secure because Simple Chat will (obviously) not contain bad language or harassing sentences and they cannot view messages from Normal chat users, (unless a normal chat user USES simple chat to write back to a simple chat user) preventing them from seeing anything they shouldn't see.
*EDIT* Also, in the room list that tells you who's in the room, Normal chat users and simple chat users should be different colours.
*EDIT2* If you click the button 'The code is _____.', a prompt could appear on screen to confirm whether you want to send the code. Also, instead of just loads of options for them to say on the right side, there could be categories, e.g, you click on 'General' and it will come up with 'Hello.', 'Goodbye', 'Yes', 'No' etc. etc.
Yes, that is a very confusing paragraph, but if you read it carefully it makes sense (hopefully)
PS. This is MY idea. That is all.
GREAT ONE!
A lot of you guys are missing the point. The reason the current system is in place is because, as Chris said, (paraphrasing) "There's bad stuff out there, but I won't have it on everybody edits." Chris hasn't thought of a way to prevent it so far, so he's just placed a temporary block so that if they are going to be exposed, at least the parents will let them be exposed knowingly. None of the systems that have been proposed so far solve the problem.
A point system is very complex, a younger player would not understand it, and probably ignore it until they make some mistake that they get banned for because they didn't understand the system.
A chat filter will never work because the people who cuss as a way of life will find a way around it, always. Always.
SafeChat is basically useless.
The current 1 cent system is bulky and awkward, and for me it isn't really even worth it to try to complete it.
A report system is unreliable, and it does not prevent the problem, it simply stops repeat offenders.
There are people who simply want to be mean, and its just the way they are. Words make it easier for them to do so, but when we didn't have chat on the open rooms people would "raid" and destroy other people's things. People are just like that, and they're all over the internet.
A perfect system may not exist.
As for myself, I propose public humiliation. Or the guillotine. The latter would probably be harder to implement.

I want abject humiliation for one time offenders! Then, then, the guillotine. Or firing squad XD

Definately the Firing Squad.
I think it's not fair when some people get chat, because there parents don't have paypal or creditcard. The lol will be deleted ( or something like that). Can someone subscribe, because i have an idea. We give someone the code 4 gems and that person with paypal or creditcard makes four you a chat verification. That is good who want to do that?

YAY
SafeChat is basically useless.
I know it doesn't give you as much freedom as in normal chat, and it doesn't fix the whole problem, but SafeChat still links up people who don't have normal chat with the people who do have normal chat, so that all players can ask questions related to the game and get answers without seeing things they shouldn't be seeing.
This will benefit players who have verified chat because at the moment if you want to tell people who don't have chat something important, you can't and they go on doing something that is different to what you want them to do.

Seriously, call Club Penguin at 1-888-8614-111 I believe. It's in California. Call and ask if you can know how to make a ban filter? IF someone swears on Club Penguin, they get banned for some amount of time. Noclue how long cuz I haven't done it! lol. READ MY SIGNATURE FOR NEW YEARS LEVEL
Maybe you could unlock chat for everybody in a room with a mod present, because the mod could watch out for any bad pplz. Or, betas could still keep chat, because since they already had to pay for beta, they probably have parent approval.

Arnt you a troll? Sorry to get off topic, but who would call club penguin?!?! Nobody even plays that anymore because you have to pay to do almost anything.
Heres what I would do:
Not give a crap. People are to brainwashed by society to realize a word only means what you make it. Theres absolutely no reason that its ok to say "poop", but "crap" is a terrible word, and etc. Even really offensive things like racial slurs mean nothing because anyone who uses them is obviously not to be taken seriously.
I understand you can't do that though, so here are some suggestions:
1. Word filter and bans. They have been discussed already, I think the points idea was a good one.
2. Test. If a person under 15 is smart enough to solve a year 15 math problem, they deserve the chat.
3. Send a verification email to an email that has to be DIFFERENT then the one used for the account. This wont stop all people but some will use it correctly. Those who don't still have 1 or 2.
4. Make swearing not worth it: If someone uses a swear word, make all their energy disappear. If they do it again, take away some of their maximum energy. They will get it eventually, and if they don't, the swear filter will have banned them by then.
5. Make people set an age limit on their games. They can say, "This game is for people _+ or _ - _". Kids who know their parents wouldn't want them on that game might be smart. Do the same thing with chat, have an under 13 and over 13 chat in each level. Combined with all the steps it will work. I don't want the game to be separated, but if it must, it must.
And more things like these. None of them are a catch-all, but they don't need to be. It's like a water filter: 1 layer will let some things through, but 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 will stop the majority of the bad things from getting in.
But whatever you do, do NOT add safechat. Safechat is a horrible thing that needs to be banned from earth. It doesn't have enough phrases to be useful unless the word library is so big it's impossible to navigate, and it's just annoying.

Why is everyone against SafeChat? I want to talk to people who don't have chat cuz it gets on my **** when I want them to do something but they can't see what I'm writing!

...it doesn't have enough phrases to be useful? A simple phrase like 'Help me make a boss level' is already going to be useful without a doubt? It just needs important things like that so all players can talk and get responses.
If you're saying it's not useful then say why it isn't..

That would be great, if you just happen to want to say that. What If I want to have a real conversation with someone? Safechat is fine for just talking about the level, but if you want to make the chat feature useful it falls flat.
I suppose, but it'd be good to have for the time being, I can't think of any secure ways to chat normally atm lol
This is a reason why, some creator made an impossible level, and the creator didn't have chat...
A simple SimpleChat message would've solved this problem

I'm 15 and obviously I don't have a credit card, but my parents don't let me use theirs.
It's rather annoying that I can't use this chat for a measy 1 cent, as I've already bought stuff with gems, but I can't pay the 1 cent -.-
I think a log system and moderator recruiting would work.
Create a topic on the forums telling people to write a recruitment form to become a mod, then just try getting as much as possible (good ones, ofc), and send them out into the rooms, keep the logs of their chat and let an administrator overlook them if there's something suspicious about the person. Also make a log system (if it's not made yet) so the mods can see what people have typed all over the room, so they can mute/ban the persons swearing.
Also another thing I've thought of, which is not really that good, because it's hard to keep track of it; Skype, then at least the people who have a webcam and/or microphone can prove they're over 13/15 and they can prove they're allowed to chat. It would work like this: the person who wants to be able to chat, tells a moderator his Skype (or Msn or w/e) account, they have a quick call and the mod asks some questions over the mic, to see how mature the person is.
Or you could get someone to make a TeamSpeak 3/Ventrilo server in which people can make open channels for their room, then people can just go Vent or TS3 if they need help in the lvl.
Some room creators write an url to a TinyChat room, I like them doing that, but not a lot of them do it...
