Talent--Discussion

The other day, me and my friend got into a debate of sorts over talent..

She said that anybody can learn a talent, that its not inborn, that it can be developed over time.

I was arguing the point that some people are born with a certain affinity to something, like art, or music.

I'll give my side, since Im sure others will disagree--

Speaking from a musical standpoint, I've seen many people who practice hours and hours a day, some even longer than I do, and yet their sound still lacks a certain--oomph--, a spark, it seems that they are simply going through the motions without feeling the "spirit" if you will of the music, conducting the beauty through their motions. THey are simply mechanical drone-like musicians.

Its the same with art, I've tried to draw, I could just never capture the style I was going for..It just never came to me.

This is why I think that some people are born with a talent already inside, or maybe the ability or the "spark"..

There's a fine line between skill and talent, in my opinion. Skill is something that takes time, training, and practice. Talent is when it comes naturally, and is sort of like a diamond in the rough.

For example, you could -- to use your musical example -- practice piano for hours upon hours, and be good, and have that as a skill, but you could also one day just walk over to a piano and create gorgeous music without any prior playing (which is probably quite improbable), which would mean it would be a talent of yours.

Skill and talent are similar, but they're not the same thing. That's just how I see it.

Well like you said, theres a line between skill and talent, but then I would say there's also another line between talent and prodigy, or being a savant. I think prodigy is when you can create music without lessons or any experience, (which is really rare) but I think talent is a different beast all together.

Skill, I would say, is knowing HOW to do something, knowing the technicalities of it. To get away from music, say someone knew HOW to draw. That doesn't mean that they'd be able to create a beautiful work of art. It takes style, capturing the beauty of the world in pencil to be able to do that. I think THAT takes talent. Whether or not it comes right away is irrelevant, I think.

Im saying there are three types of people when it comes to art. There are prodigies, who have talent, skill, and whatever else you want to call it, without having to learn (which is super rare, Mozart rare), then there are the talented, the people who have the affinity, as i said before, for an art, and are able to blossom, and then there are the people who dont have the talent, who just can't seem to capture the essence of the art.

Thats just my opinion

I believe our minds are the same when born, because things like talent are not inherited from our parents. Anything that's not inherited from our parents is either a trait that everyone has or something you developed based on how you grow and how you were brought up.

One thing I have to mention, is that the strongest memories are from when you were young. So "naturals" most likely had a unique childhood, noticeable or not. Also, children learn things more easily, that's why children can learn languages easier than adults. So maybe that's why people have to practice a lot to develop a "skill", while the people who have "talent" have had their experience built up, possibly from something like just listening to a lot of music since childhood, so it's much easier for them to learn something.

I think that naturally we do have different abilities as our brains differ from everyone else, and people definitely have talent but everyone can develop a skill.

I'm not musically talented but after working hard at forming the skill of playing the guitar I am doing quite well and I think I am able to get better.

Talent Exists, so does skill.

I feel that talent is earned, not a natural-given ability. You might have the passion from the beginning, but what matters is how you work to achieving the goal. I believe it's an even playing field.

But then again theres the whole right-brain, left-brain thing that says people prefer either the creative side of their brain or the math/science side, which would imply that the creative side be more apt to art than the math people
