Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Capital Punishment

Is anyone here for or against capital punishment?

I am currently against capital punishment only because innocent people would eventually end up being killed, but if I was guaranteed a 100% guilty system, I would be for the death penalty for child molesters, serial killers, etc. This is because I believe some people are so 'mental', that there is nothing that can be done for them, as they lack key features of what makes a modern human.

Re: Capital Punishment

I pretty much agree with you Treejoe4. I am mostly against capital punishment.
My issue with the justice system is mainly with jail for life. I've read that prisoners in America get better treatment then school children. I even once watched a documentary once about how some American prisons are more like day camps, except they are free. People get free food, access to health care, free cable, sometimes internet, etc... Why should criminals be in jail for life? Some people are never going to change, so why should they be kept alive for life? What good are they contributing to society? I don't mean to sound conceited, but I'd rather see money help a child go to school than to help a criminal get a meal.

Re: Capital Punishment

Another issue within this is regarding the actual execution, where the person suffers before the drug takes full/effect or something to that effect.
Honestly, I think that it's strange that in the year 2014 we can't kill someone painlessly and humanely, but imagine how much pain the victims suffered?
The entire thing is a lengthy discussion and I don't really take a stance on it. Just sharing the first thing that comes to my head.

Re: Capital Punishment

Psychopathy has no cure. Idealist social dreams and blah blah blah aren't as effective as just eliminating these criminals from society altogether.

If there was a way to prevent the ~5% of those who were later proved to be innocent from being involved, I'd be all for it. Some heinous crimes do deserve death.

Re: Capital Punishment

Capital punishment seems cold.   It's essentially dealing with a situation by completely annihilating it.   It's simple, but so extreme.   I'd even say it's taking the easy way out.

Would it not be preferable to "fix" them?   To eradicate the motives for their crime?   I don't know of a way to reliably mold people to your desire, but I can't imagine it being impossible.   We should work toward that.   Fixing, not destroying the criminals.

Yeah, well, you know that's just like, uh, your opinion, man.

Re: Capital Punishment

With neuropsychology being advanced, I see a time where a human psyche can be fixed and/or analysed affordably.

Re: Capital Punishment

The idea of an institution trying to "fix" people seems scarier than capital punishment IMO. Read 1984 or something.

That may be true for many cases, and would increase in future. But there are some people who have genetic and intense psychological defects that are beyond help, like a pedophile.

it isnt something like a psychological defect, it's just a different way of thinking. it's a defect when people, like echo, seek for attention endlessly and wont stop bringing it up even in unrelated instances. no you are not special, nobody cares. though yes some people have forms of these that make it a defect.

echo says he takes therapy (which i doubt), but even if he somehow became not a pedo he would still bring it up. "hey did you know i used to be a pedo? but im alright now!!!!"

Therapy doesn't work for that, the only thing that does is drugs and surgery.

The pros of social engineering far outweigh the cons.

And besides, if a government can get away with the brainwashing of an entire country, then there are other problems in the world.

N. Korea's usage of brainwashing is trivial and doesn't amount to much.   This type of brainwashing is much more serious and would without a doubt be met with opposition from the majority of the world if attempted for evil.
