Jumping through a single-block gap

This is me unable to jump through the gap below me.

This is me able to jump through the gap below me.

This is me after jumping through the gap below me without pressing anything besides spacebar.

... wtf?

I haven't replicated the third bit again yet, but haven't been trying. This was just going to be about the problems jumping through such gaps (in any direction), but then that third bit happened.

I don't see the problem? Could you explain what the bug is?

My position in the first and second screenshots is visually identical, yet in one I was able to jump and in the other I wasn't.

Further confusing the issue is that my position in the third screenshot is horizontally identical to the other two, yet I was able to jump through the gap and, further, didn't fall back through.
