Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Forum Ranks: Part XVIII

I am beating a dead horse, but I still disagree with the display of post count, and by extension, the ranks based on this number.

Quality trumps quantity in written language; don't use seven words when four will do. Our schools reenforce the opposite; I can trim my five page essay down to five paraghraphs and get my point across with no fluff, but then I fail the assignment for disregarding the arbitrary minimum page requirement.

My opinion extends to forum post count, which psychologically reinforces, "The more I post, the more the forum values me." I'd rather occasionally post a well-thought-out message than impulsively reply to every thread I see.

Really? I agree with all of them.

Obligatory piece of text placed here forcing you to load an extra 100 bytes of data per post I make.

Re: Forum Ranks: Part XVIII

I like having a post count. It encourages members to stay active, and I think the ranks are fun. Jakery brings up a good point, though. We don't want to over-encourage members to post often, because that'll just result in spam and whatnot. I say we keep the count but ditch the ranks if it becomes a problem. Right now, it doesn't seem like such a big deal to me.

I see no point in removing the post count/ranks.   If members go out of their way to spam to get a new rank, they get warnings/bans.   Plus, many forum users enjoy having ranks.

^Yes.

But still, Rurigok, there are way too many spam posts. Giving them 6 warnings until you permanently ban them is being a little too easy, imo.

Yeah, well, you know that's just like, uh, your opinion, man.

Re: Forum Ranks: Part XVIII

Post count != full ranking system, post count = how active someone is.

There are obviously exceptions. For example, I think of myself as pretty active, and usually read every topic that I feel is interesting, but I don't post in every single topic I enter just because I can. I post because I feel there should be something said that hasn't been said yet.

Different, on the other hand, comments on everything he sees, giving him his high post count.

(Btw, he told me this; it's not my opinion)

I would like to point out that a high forum rank is meaningless and grants no special privileges.

Make Off-Topic, and Forum Games section post unable to count as real post.

I don't see what's the big deal, just because you have a high post count doesn't mean anything. The only thing it points out is that you are always posting.

Correct. I'm just thinking of the psychological effect, even if it's a subtle one.

Re: Forum Ranks: Part XVIII

I don't think you should take away something that somebody earned just because you disagree with it. They posted, probably within the rules if they're not banned, to get to that rank, and they should get to keep that rank. Even if there's something subliminal about it, experienced forum members will be unaffected. New forum members may respect those with a higher post count more, but that's it. Other than that, it's just a name.
