How to Pick a Mod

In my opinion I think all moderators should be chosen by the community, therefore I suggest the forums should have a system of nomination and voting.

First of all any in-active, or bad moderators should be stripped out their moderator status. If they aren't going to help the forums then they should not be moderators of these forums.

Now obviously instead of making a million "I nominate... topics" we should have one central voting topic where every time we need a new mod we should be able to able to vote for who we want.

When we need a new mod the announcements at the top of the page should say " Now accepting moderator nominations" then the community can name out who they think would be a good mod. Then the moderators and admins can pick out who they think would be the best choices and the the community vote among them for a new mod.

I think this way it would allow to community to pick who they want to run their forums, and it would pretty much guarantee that whoever is a mod if a fair one too because obviously people wouldn't vote for someone who would ruin the forums.

Who agrees?

I pick Supadorf and Takoman because they are my friends and they would be good mods.

That's how it's gonna go.

Re: How to Pick a Mod

There would be 3 steps to becoming a mod.

1. Nomination from another forumer member that is not yourself

if you get nominated you must be...

2. Recommended by a current mod

then if you get that far...

3. There will be one final vote by both the whole of the community and the current moderators/admins

And that is how you would become a moderator.

I rather have people fill out applications. Not a democracy, blah, blah, etc.

Even if there were a community-wide vote, the administrators would have the final say.

A brief example?   What would you have them say?   Your idea is no doubt far better than the popularity contest proposed anyhow.

Being a moderator is a job, it's not some power gain. You have to do work. Applications would work because people can tell us why they want to be a mod, what timezone their in, what times they are on, etc.

In case you misread, I didn't say applications would be a bad thing.   I said they'd be better than a popularity contest, which forum wide voting usually is.

I never said you did. I started my post with an introduction to the topic and followed it with an example of what would be on the application, as you requested.

I thought it sounded like you were irritated by what I said or something, but clearly not.

Do you think the mods/admins could make reasonable decisions about who to make moderators?   Would they be much better than the regular users concerning votes based on popularity and such?

I think we should keep the sort of admin oligarchy. They seem to be doing a good job of picking so far.

Well, I would assume, that while regular users would have bias as pertained to their vote, a staff member would be choosing on qualities, such as activity, personality, how they act, etc. The application idea, is just that, an idea. I honestly, couldn't see it working that well. The people who would turn in good applications, are probably the people we have on our "list".

This would be overused a lot. It is a good idea, but think about it.

"I want ____ to be a mod!" <-- why? he's my friend

I do not agree. Like most moderators and administrators just said they are super completely correct.

Re: How to Pick a Mod

All I am saying is if people are going to complain about the moderators that admins pick then why not have the people pick their admins. The forum is run by the people for the people and therefore I think some decisions should also involve community involvement.

You're implying it is run by the people, but it's not. Most people on here are kids. It wouldn't be a true democracy, it would be a popularity contest.

Anyone who says it would't be a popularity contest can ask Rurigok what happened when they were taking nominations for moderators. And I quote...

So far, Chewy has the public's support behind him, with almost every vote for him.   Nou was also nominated.   Who do you guys think should be the new mods?

Why did everyone know me? Because I was that guy that wanted a bunch of -rep, thus everybody knew me.

Re: How to Pick a Mod

Sorry, but I just had to say this:
I don't have a good rep/post ratio. I don't switch sigs and avatars often. I don't have an interesting name. I don't have anything to say 'Haha, I'm better than you with this'. I feel like I'm pathetic, although I know most of you don't agree with me, but I had to say it.

Before Alex became a mod, we had something similar to nominations and a bunch of people thought about picking Flare because he posted a lot and was the first to have one thousand posts.

I also remember making a lengthy post stating the cons of the most said people (With Flare being the first on the list, iirc), and I told people to vote wisely.
Funnily enough, I said that RPGMaster2000 would be a bad mod and he agreed. Now he's an admin. Funny how things work.

It would most definitely be a popularity contest, we don't need a democracy; we need a limited monarchy.

Re: How to Pick a Mod

I definitely think we should provide reasons with whoever we vote for, because this way you can sort the newbs from the people who actually would like to see someone as a mod and not necessarily their friend.

Bad vote: becuz he's nice and he's my friend and he has a big post count
Good vote: Contributes a ton to the forum, seems to be very active, and seems justifiable in his actions and opinions.

Yeah, well, you know that's just like, uh, your opinion, man.

Re: How to Pick a Mod

Perhaps a select few of people can be in a Voting Committee, and they vote for actions on the forums and mod selection (The older and wiser members)
