Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

The crazy # of spam accounts

Look here:
http://eeforumify.com/userlist.php?user … r=DESC&p=1
This is why the forum crashed??

Are these going to be deleted or what?

Re: The crazy # of spam accounts

I believe 90% of all registered users are spam accounts, whether they actually post or not.

If they were the reason the forum crashed, I would suspect we would've seen it happen more frequently in the past.

Edit: Stupid auto-correct.

Re: The crazy # of spam accounts

Are the mods going to clean those accounts out or what? There's so many pages in the user list of just random accounts that were made today, yesterday, 3 days ago, etc.
This isn't good for the forum.

It's way too much work, it's almost impossible. Plus, there's no real advantages that would make all the work worth it.

Re: The crazy # of spam accounts

the number of accounts with 0 posts are as followed:
78.379154698399671727533853098071%

damn, more 3/4 of accounts have not posted. a lot most be spam
NOET: i did number of accounts (24370) divided by the number of accounts with 0 posts (19101) with the decimal moved two places to the left. this will not be updated.

THIS NUMBER IS VALID AT LEAST FROM 6:56 PM 11/4/13. IT WILL GET BIGGER, SADLY.

Re: The crazy # of spam accounts

We're not going to assume every new user is an adbot and start banning them for not posting.

A much better solution is to monitor the user's first 10 posts. That eliminates 99% of adbots/spambots/raiders.

Yeah, well, you know that's just like, uh, your opinion, man.

Re: The crazy # of spam accounts

Most spam bots only make one post. Monitoring their first 10 won't cut down on spam all that much.

There's a simple button that can delete all accounts with lower than X posts, and that is younger than Y.

Where'd you find that?

Just because we can prune accounts doesn't mean we should. Trying to process a query that large would more than likely kill the database. There is not much we can do at the moment, unfortunately.

I have a forum on Punbb-Hosting that uses similar stuff to Forumify. There's a feature that does what I said above.

Re: The crazy # of spam accounts

I think we should just leave them. If they're not doing anything, there's no problem.

You should add captcha to the registration form... If someone enters it three times wrong, their IP should be banned for a day. Can this stop it?

We already have a captcha, but clearly it's not doing it's job. We need either a better captcha or a different type of captcha.

@bimps: your stats are being ignored because they are not what the current discussion is about right now. It's nice that we know how polluted our forums are, though.

By "monitor" I meant the blog type thing where it isn't displayed until a moderator approves it.

We're talking about the number of spam accounts, not captchas. Captchas came up in this topic but this topic is still about the number of spam accounts.

That would work well but it would probably never happen.

How about delete every user that has 0 posts that is older than 1 month?
