Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

All about the Report button

This is a basic guide to the reporting system.

How reporting works
In the bottom right corner of every post are 2 links:

When you click the Report link, a simple form comes up. You write why you reported the post and click the button. That report   goes into a queue that only mods and admins can see. When a mod clicks on the report, he is taken to the reported post. He decides what to do and takes appropriate action. When the mod is finished, he removes the report from the queue. The end.

Reporting is confidential. Only the mods know who reported what, and we don't tell anyone else.

Writing a reason
You don't have to write out a long explanation. You can usually give all the information mods need in just a couple of words.

Meh: "This user double posted in the topic which is against the rules!"
Great: "Double post"

Meh: "This guy is spamming the topic. He should be banned."
Great: "Spam"

Meh: "I started a thread about a level, and this guy came in and went off on a tangent and now everyone's arguing about stuff that has nothing to do with my level!"
Great: "My thread got derailed."
What to use the report system for
Posts that break rules
Yes, even report mild stuff like threads in the wrong topic. Just because you reported doesn't mean the poster will get in trouble. When you report, you're helping the mods keep the boards neat and tidy.

Annoying behavior
If someone is wrecking the conversation, or getting off topic, a mod can step in and help.

Non-kid-friendly content
12-year-olds use this forum, too.

Rule-breaking signatures
If a sig is over the max height (currently 300px), or if the contents of the sig break the rules, a mod can go in and modify the sig as needed.

Mini-Modding
(see below)

Topic title change requests
If you want to change the title of your topic, click "Report" on your first post and say, "Please change the title to [X]".

Don't abuse the report button
Reporting is not a toy
Fake reports waste the mods' time. Don't report things just to "test" the button. Don't make "joke" reports or false reports. Abuse of the report button can be punished with a warning.

If you aren't sure...
If you think something should be reported, but you aren't sure, go ahead and report it anyway, and say that you aren't sure.
Example: "Flaming (not sure)"
Even if the mod decides not to take action, you won't get in trouble for reporting something in good faith.

Report. Don't Reply.
Mini-modding
If a regular forum user is trying to act as a moderator, he only draws negative attention to himself. A "mini-mod" lacks authority to resolve most problems, so the net effect is topic spam.

Mini-mod posts include these (and many more):

"You broke the rules"
"This thread belongs in [other category]"
"Double-post!"
"That was a worthless gravedig."

When non-mods start calling out broken rules, they can create confusion. Only mods officially decide if a rule has been broken. The reason mods exist is because forum rules are subjective by nature. Mods sometimes look at a reported post and think to themselves, "I can see how [reporter] thinks that [rule x] was broken, but this is actually an acceptable post.", and then they take no action. Please leave post evaluation to the mods.

"[user], no mini-modding."
Calling someone else out for mini-modding is still mini-modding.

"Mods, get in here!""
A mod doesn't see your message unless he's already reading the thread.

"Reported."
You're only calling attention to yourself.

"You broke the rules. You get a warning."
Only Mods determine when warnings should be issued.

The report system works really well. Use it!

Any Questions?

Re: All about the Report button

^yes. I suppose that goes with non-kid-friendly behavior.

EDIT: T'was talking to takoman

Jareky: Awesome job. We need this, sadly. Also, you should put more examples with "mods, get in here!", such as "inb4lock" and "this belongs in [x]"

Well, not just offensive signatures. For some reason Cyclops enjoys putting private links in his signature even when he knows it's not supposed to be there.

Lol, Sometimes I wonder if you mods enjoy the small doses of humor I sometimes mix in with my reports.

edit: Is it okay to report mini modding?

At home. I'm on a farm right now. With goats and chickens and cats and dogs and horses and macs.

Re: All about the Report button

I dunno, maybe. I think it deserves to be put into the signup form or the rules. Cyclone should program a page with things you need to see that includes the rules, this page, The Ultimate FAQ, and topic placements, all the things that newbs seem to screw up/wonder about.

EDIT: make, not program. He should make it so it automatically takes you to said page after you sign up and agree to the rules.

Could you say who instead of "they"? I know I always answer reports when I see them.

Re: All about the Report button

I suppose we could figure this out by looking at the report history for a while and seeing who zaps most often, but there's no reason. I think that every mod responds immediately.

BTW Opera is auto-reloading every 3 minutes so I should be on 24/7 except the times my parents see opera open and hidden and they close it.

Actually, people really need to stop minimodding. It's pretty annoying and I'm not even a mod.

I occasionally do that. Not so much anymore. I've run out of puns.

I like the occasional joke in a report.

Re: All about the Report button

And do you get a warning? Or just a slap? If it is a warn, is it a MM for MiniMod?

This has been 24/7 D55.

>_>

You CAN get a warning, or a slap, up to the mod/admin.   Sure, MM works.

During the recent spam attack, I was like, "dammit, Chimi. Just say 'goatse'." Normally, though, I do enjoy the mirth you inject. //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/smile

Re: All about the Report button

Lol, Im glad brevity is encouraged, Ive been on forums that prefer rule-quoting, and I get frustrated with concepts like "ITS A GOATSE HOW CAN IT NOT BE AGAINST THE RULES?"
