Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

3d images in EE

Hi all,

I stumbled upon a site today and wondering if anyone ever tried to bring such images into EE.
It is about a 3d like effect when viewing the images. I would offer cookies for any advises or ideas //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/wink
Maybe we can set up a little team just to review the possiblities for this technique in EE.

We have two eyes, but with the exception of specialised equipment, cameras only have one lens. There are ways to ?cheat? however, and for almost as long as there have been cameras, there have been people trying to find ways to take and view 3D photos.
When the two slightly different images are processed, they are placed side-by-side so that the viewer can use a special ?crossed-eye? technique to overlap them, and see both views together in 3D.

3d.jpg
How to view such images?

# Sit square in front of your monitor, with the image directly in front of you, at about arm?s length
# Sitting further back makes it easier ? you don?t need to cross your eyes as much ? but makes the image look smaller
# Make sure you keep your head level horizontally, tilting your head will prevent you from merging the images
# While keeping the stereo pair of images in the centre of your vision, slowly cross your eyes
# The stereo pair will go out of focus and you will seem to see four images, as shown in the animation above
# If you find it hard to cross your eyes, it can help to hold a pen in front of you and look at the tip with the stereo pair in the background
# Gradually cross your eyes more and more ? if using a pen to assist, start it close to the monitor and move it towards your nose
# Continue crossing your eyes more, untill the centre two of the four images overlap and you see three blurry images, as in the animation above
# Try and hold the centre image together ? it is possible to ?lock? it in place and see it as one image
# The ?locked? centre image should appear in 3D!
# Now the tricky part, focus ? while holding the 3D image in place, relax your eyes ? drop the pen from your field of view if you are using it
# If you can keep the 3D image locked and relax your eyes, it should eventually pop into focus, as in the last frame of the animation above

It works. Now this is what I call 3D without 3D glasses. I like your idea.

edit: I was amazed then I tried it several times. I felt a bit dizzy doing that again and again.

Yes, its exhausting. Currently try to find a proper image which works with the more or less small size of the map-window.

I am up to abandon my nude project to get my 400x200 ready for 3d, but ..still thinking about it.

I don`t want to ruin your idea/plans, but, it`s impossible to make real 3d in EE. you need more colors, details, and a bigger map, not to mention that if you want to create this ^^ effect you need perfect "art" skills and the perfect position and distances, Imo you should try first with some real photos, upload them with autobuilder and see if you can get the same effect on the map, if not, at least you don`t lose your time //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/big_smile

Why did you say perfect art? Someone could try to use simple geometric figures like a cube or something like this. Same effect. Less work //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/wink

I've tested with magic eye pictures before, which uses similar principles.   It isn't perfect, but it works.

Remember you're dealing with kids on the internet. All they're going to see is to pictures that look exactly the same and not care.

Like, for instance, when I created Cheap Cheap beach. The whole point was to collect as few coins as possible. I even said that in giant letters off to the side. Nobody read them, they just collected all the coins like crazy.

Yeah, well, you know that's just like, uh, your opinion, man.

Re: 3d images in EE

With the assistance of "uploading"- tools I made a map as preview for any possible map someone wants to start:
3d_preview.jpg

Using the mentioned technique (crossing eyes) it is possible to see a partial 3d effect on the minimap. However, the minimap itself is limited in its size and it might not reveal the full effect at all. Even in fullscreen. The affort to create such a map is marginal as EE-Artist or other tools are available for almost everyone.

Having a 3d model on the map ..is challanging //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/wink
Anyway, everyone should judge on his own if these 3d possibilites fit into EE.

I couldn't too, but I practiced on these images for about 10 mins and now I can //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/wink.
This is an amazing effect I didn't even know about before I read this. It'll be quite a challenge putting it into EE.
