Sleepy's Art Tutorial

Hello everybody I'm Sleepy, I guess some of you may know me, mostly because of this topic.
But anyways, I wont get too off-topic anymore. (hopefully //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/wink)

So as the title of the topic says, this is my tutorial for art, I will try to include almost
everything about pixel art, art it self, and techniques that some of you may not know.
I made this topic in a hope that it will help people on EE and maybe even other sources to understand a bit more what is pixel art.

Anti Aliasing
************
I'll start with a very basic, yet very important technique in digital art called anti aliasing,-
(as you can see above) or in an acronyms, AA. Many of you probably heard of the word, maybe even checked what it is, but I can assume that some, even a lot of you are not really sure what it is, so I'm going to explain you it in the way I know about it and the way it is most likely is.
p8YyD.png
So as you can see above, there is a picture of a line and a round shape ball with banding
and again the same line and ball just this time with anti aliasing and another one which just has an extra AA to make it look glowy as you may have wanted to do with banding.
I've noticed that many players in EE keep using banding, as they probably think it'll help the
object they drew/pixeld to blend with the background, well get that out of your mind! Even if you have another reason to use banding, it wont help the object you drew/pixel'd look any better,

Back to the point. AA is most likely a method in digital art used to create/fix jagged
looking edges to look smoother, that's pretty much it, but just so you won't get confused
too much AA is really not going to help you, not only that it will get you confused with the
amount of colours, and where each shade should be, it may also create AA banding (see image below).
92EMb.png

And straight a-head, I'll start talking about banding so you could actually understand what
makes it looks so bad and so you would also understand many other subjects with-in it(one-
of them, as previously talked, is called, AA banding)

Banding
*******
So as you have read previously, banding is simply, bad, and actually should never be used.
The reason for that is because when pixels line up each other, when that happens, the whole grid becomes very seen-able and the resolution becomes looking less nicer.
I would also like to talk now about what I've talked about in the AA subject, called, AA banding so as you have seen in the last image I've sent, the lines, just like in banding line up, with the same reasons as I've already talked about.
6IBCz.png
(in the picture above you can see banding)

Pillow shading
**************
Is basically when there is no actual light source.
I've seen many times in EE that the art many make doesn't actually have a light source, just like there is light from random areas, and below you can see and example of pillow sahding (right) and an example of the same object with an actual light source.
IPGk3.png

Dithering
*********
Most of you probably know it and use it, but I have understood lately that many people use it way too much.
For these who don't know what dithering is, or not sure what it is, I'll explain. Most of the use
with dithering is making the passageway between the colours less seen able without adding another colour.
The most common type of dithering seems to be a 50% dithering
l1Uk9.png
Even though there are some more types of dithering.
5acaJ.png
Also I would like to note about, as it's called, random dithering or even more basically "trolling".
Overall, using random dithering is fine, but it's not the best thing to do, as it's really out place and it might ruin many details.

The outline
***********
Many of you make outline, even my self sometimes (depends on the background and the style) but I realized that the people who make outlines, usually, forget about the whole lighting direction.
ZwhlR.png
As you can see on the picture, there are two circle halfs and a "sun", the sliced circle on the
left is the wrong way of doing the outline rather than the one on the right, which has the
lighting effect on it.
Now, when we're over the most important techniques, let's starts with palletes.

As you know (maybe not) there are about 110 colours (sorry if more or less)
which display on EE's mini-map, all of them are very usefull, in their own ways.
I'll start with the very basics, the primary colours.
zMrwT.png (red, blue and yellow only)
I assume most of you know what it is (above), if not all of you readers. But I'll explain it anyways.
The actual primary colours are red, blue and yellow, but on the computer it's actually red, blue and green and they have a name "Additive colours". You're most be wondering why.
Well, not like in IRL, the colours in the computer are created by additive light, but when the
pixels are viewed from a-sufficient distance, the light wont be visible to our eyes.
Now, IRL, red, blue and yellow CANNOT be created by any other colours yet can create ANY colour, which makes them so special and useful. I dunno if you knew that, but white and black are NOT colours, they cannot be created from any colour IRL.
But that was just to make your overall knowledge about colours a-bit bigger. //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/tongue
Oh, also, since the new background colours came, you can greatly increase your pallate, as you can see below.
XF5Zn.png

Let's talk about the cold and hot colours now,
528If.png
formally there are the two main cold colours (blue and green)
and there are two hot colours (red and yellow), and another one in the middle, purple.
Purple doesn't have a temperature, it can be hot nor cold, not even changing it's amount
of red or blue.
gEWEt.png
(pretty bad example, sorry)

That's probably the reason that I use purple that much in EE, since it's so greatly can be used, but I've also got used to it in the old versions of EE, when there weren't really any of those "dark mid colours", yet the dark purple in EE was one of them.
But other-wise it really adds the picture some "life", and I've almost forgot, as the colour is
colder it get's colder, so it will be added with blue or green (rarely with purple or brown)
and it will also become darker.
And as the colour get's hotter, it will be added with red or yellow and as I said before it will
rarely will be added with purple or brown, and will also become lighter, notice that it might be
more logical to get less yellow, for example, on a grey metal.
And if we're already talking about metals, let's start talking about how palletes are Influenced just from the material.
kqEfa.png
So as you can see in the image above, the first object (from right to left) has a very metalic look and a second light source which most of the metals have (it's not always blue, only if the second light source is blue, then the area it hits will have it's colour, otherwise it will just be as the original colour just a -bit lighter)
As for the second object, well, that one doesn't have any metallic feeling, more like plastic.
there is abit of shine, but yet not much like on the metal's one.
And the third one look more like rubber.
By the way, here are some grey-ish colours, might be useful. //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/smile
qRbtW.png

Basically, light sources and shading are very important for the the material the object's made of.
Let's talk about perspective now, I've seen so many times on EE and IRL bad perspectives, I can ensure you that it's really important.
So what is perspective exactly?
Well, perspective is used in art to make any object there is a 3D feeling, otherwise, without it, these objects would look rather flat and not 3D.
When you use perspective all of the lines of a cube (for example) go into two direction, left and right (depends where you put them and which effect you want to give to the image).

Yes, I've made a few sketches that may help you abit more then my explantion. //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/tongue

For the level that most of the images were made in, you can click this:

(there is some art I made there by the way)

That's it for now, I'll try to keep updating this topic with some new material.
Also, if it's possible, can one of the moderators make this topic "Sticky", I think this topic may actually help some people.
Thanks for your time everybody and I really hope this topic helped you. //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/smile

@NikK, yes as I wrote that people might probably knew about some techniques, but I'm very pleased that you found some useful and new information in here. //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/smile

@Wolf exile1
Well, from what I've seen it's really the opposite, most of the forum community to me,wont use nor know about all of this stuff (as I've seen in some levels it's really not using the methods to actually create a pleasing art to the eye ), I might still be wrong.
And as I've said once or maybe even twice, people might of heard about it, but not exactly know what it is.
There is quite a difference between knowing and assuming.
But thanks, you have a point there. //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/smile
