Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Does eyerape actually hurt your eyes? For me, it doesn't. It just obstructs. To me, that doesn't seem like such a bad thing. Of course it's bad for the player, but as an obstacle. Like playing a mini, it's a challenge. Sometimes obstruction can be used as an innovative tool to add to the gameplay experience. I think it can even be used to make a level feel more realistic. For example, a room full of smoke. In real life, you won't be able to see well, so in-game eyerape can emulate that experience. I know it's a strange way to think of eyerape, since most people consider it to be really annoying and unnecessary no matter what, but I honestly think something can be done with it.

it's like doing hookjumps, it sucks and it's bad and it's artificial difficulty
I think hookjumps are just annoying. And I've always thought that the annoying factor in a mini is basically whether the player wants to carry on after failing it countless times. Difficulty plays a role in this, but it's hard to determine what exactly causes the player to feel annoyed about a mini. Is this what you mean by artificial difficulty?
Also, obstruction is used in games other than EE, and it's not annoying in those games. Random example, in Dead Center (a map from Left 4 Dead 2), after you come out of the elevator there's fire and smoke everywhere, so it's hard to see and you have to get through the horde of zombies while not being able to see very well. Can this be compared to playing a mini in an eyerape environment?
I have tried to use eyerape before, in Industrial Grey. Most people didn't like it though, so I'm wondering if there is a way to integrate eyerape into gameplay and make it fun, or if it will always be bad no matter what.

i haven't played that, but it sounds bad
Left 4 Dead 2 is a pretty fun game. I'm not going to go into too much detail, but basically (I'm describing campaign mode here which is what I was referring to before) it's a co-op game which you play with 3 other players (or bots) and the basic goal is to get to the next safe room (a room containing ammo, health where the zombies can't get you), until there is a way to safety (for example, seeing a helicopter and trying to get its attention so that it can fly you away). There are special infected which are zombies with special abilities or traits, and there are better or worse ways to fight them. There are also different items which are each used for different situations. This game involves a lot of teamwork, every member of your team is vital to your survival and the survival of others.

it's the annoying kind of difficulty, the same thing as "no checkpoints"
But the difference it makes in difficulty isn't that large. It's only when people clutter up different backgrounds and decorations unnecessarily that it becomes really annoying to play. But if it's not too much, then it's not so bad.
