by the way, IIRC diff did share some point about the usefulness of advertising revenue when put toward hosting costs. Does anyone recall how much it actually helps?

Why do you think they don't? Over the past few days of relatively low activity the forums have pulled $0.15 per day. Over a month that's $4.50. Usually though when there's a nice discussion going on, the ads can generate $0.30 to $0.50, which adds up to $9-15 over a month. Costs are $10/month and sometimes we break even, sometimes we eat through the forum's savings. Hard to tell how much because the ads only pay out once they hit $100, so a little more than once per year.

Tl;Dr: forums support themselves when they're active, otherwise they don't. It's right on the edge.

that explains a lot why if theres some kind of massive drama with people going butthurt you dont go closing the topics immediately

Think of it like Wookiepedia, but instead of Wookies, it's not related to Wookies at all. Think, like, Smileys replace the role of Wookies, and instead of Star Wars there is Everybody Edits. Is that clear?
