Cool And Fun LGBT Media

I have decided that lightheartedness is the way to go here so here's some things I enjoy that have LGBT/queer characters or themes or w/e. Feel free to suggest because there are several mediums I haven't covered because I'm just one person so these are my picks.

Check, Please - webcomic - This is an on-going coming of age comic about Hockey and it's very cute, 10/10, I Screamed
Gothic Western - webcomic - This is still ongoing but I love the artstyle and worldbuilding.
Dream Daddy - visual novel - Seemed like it would be memey and a joke at first but it's a serious game. Lighthearted and fun.
Dykes To Watch Out For - comic - This dates back to 1983!! It's where the Bechdel test originates from. basically a classic in queer media. dunno if any nudity

Tusks: The Orc Dating Sim (NSFW) - visual novel - Originally free when I played it, but this has an all-queer and inclusive cast, it's real good and I loved it. basically just randomly found it on twitter and played through it. then told the creator i loved it. i think he liked my tweet
Shades Of A (NSFW) - webcomic - I read this way back when it first came out and I was just Discovering Myself and idk I still like it. Basically an asexual dude trying to navigate kink in relationships; a parody of 50 Shades Of Grey.
DAR (NSFW)- webcomic - basically a blog in comic form about the life of Erika Moen (creator of Oh Joy Sex Toy which is a. VERY nsfw and b. educational) tryna figure stuff out.

got a LIL lazy trying to find things so that's why this..... only has comics/VNs. but also because mainstream media typically doesn't have LGBT characters! and I don't watch mainstream media that much anymore, whoops!

Why Does Representation Matter?

"Oh, like That Guy On TV?"

Seeing people like yourself (or not like yourself) helps you learn about yourself and others. We can learn how to interact with the world around us from television and stuff, which is why Very Special Episodes exist. Sometimes a light bulb will go off and you'll realize... hey, I identify with this character! Having diverse casts and telling different stories appeals to a lot of different people and helps normalize things. If you see muslim people only as villians on TV, you might not have the best impression of them, so it's good to have varying kinds of representation, not just bad, not just good.

As a personal anecdote, my father used to watch this show called Sirens. I learned it had an asexual character in it; one who wasn't autistic or anything, just a completely normal chick who was asexual. That made me really pleased because it gave me a way to compare myself to something in a show my father watches. I sat there practically shaking and pretending to ignore the TV while I gauged his reaction. "oh, like a hermaphrodite?" he said, completely oblivious to how important to me this silly show I didn't watch was... and that's when I knew I could probably never explain to my dad what my sexuality was, and I still haven't discussed it with my dad. Even now, even literally a few hours ago today, I still see people saying asexuality doesn't exist or it's not part of the LGBT community and stuff like that. The only real representation it has on TV is pretty much just as a joke.

I mean, heck, I still hear people using gay as an insult. And that's hurtful, because it sends a message to other people, those who might be gay, that it's something bad.

yeah and people misusing the word rape makes me kind of angry too... cuz, y'know, rape is a serious and traumatic topic and shouldn't be misused for something like having my capslock key on.

The creator of the rainbow flag died last year. In his original version, there were eight stripes with each color signifying something.

Other and more specific LGBT groups have different flags, all with meaning attributed to the colors. We really like telling ppl who we are!!!

Bisexual

Pink for women, blue for men, and purple as a mix of both.

Pansexual

Pink for women, blue for men, and yellow for those who are neither!

Transgender

Pink for AFAB, blue for AMAB, and white for intersex. No matter which way, it's correct!
Note: someone asked if a transgender bat exists, and I searched for it: they do not. Pro-tip, people who design things based on pride flags: baseball bats is an undeveloped market

Intersex

No pink for women or blue for men because intersex people aren't firmly in one category.

Bears

This is a category specifically for gay men who are "bears" aka big and hairy. The stripes represent color of furs found in nature.

Asexual

There's a lot of detail that goes into describing exactly how you aren't attracted to people because these things are kind of a spectrum. Black is completely asexual, grey is for grey-asexual which is like "kinda?? sometimes??" attracted to people, white is sexual (or allosexual), and purple is community.

June is pride month because of the Stonewall riots that occurred in June 1969. June's been filled with pride events ever since. Not to mention June is when gay marriage was legalized nationally.
