Why in the world does the kick button ban people.

Kick doesnt mean ban, Annoying as hell

Kick is completely temporary mostly to get rid of afks
Ban is completely permanent, Mostly for griefers

kick is good for making sure that you don't just get stuck in this endless loop of
/kick
rejoin
/kick
rejoin

so you can actually do what you want to do. And we don't really have bans. (Do we?) -- if we did, perhaps we would be better off revisiting it as you suggest

Just incase you didn't know, kicks only last for a few minutes iirc, they aren't permanent. As Hummerz says this is just so people can't rejoin instantly as usually you kick people to stop them from being in the world.

Also, if you kick someone by accident and want to let them back in, you can use the /forgive <name> command

Let's not forget the /forgive command.
You can use this after you have kicked somone so they can rejoin instantly.
