I just thought I'd clarify what I meant previously (I was going to earlier but forgot):
I didn't mean that doctors wouldn't give pills if they wouldn't work for you, I meant they must work overall (do significantly more good than they do bad (on average)), and have at least a good chance of working for you
There are HUGE numbers of tests and trials that are done to make sure they do, science has something called 'peer reviewing' which means other teams of researchers repeat the exact same study, checking they agree with the methods, get the same results, and would make the same conclusions, which makes it almost certain that they can be effective for some people
