Sorry to say but the "Internet" is nothing else that a complex bunch of cables and servers.

Cables are placed by companies at a cost. You wanna use said company's service? You must agree to their terms and conditions.

Same levels of control apply to most contries for other forms of telecomunication.

In many places phone calls can be recorded and/or listened to by police. Same applies to text messages.

Net neutrality involves companies wanting their customers to pay extra to access certain websites.

So if the website doesn't pay extra, they will be "throttled" and get slower access to the internet.

EE would be screwed if it were affected.

ironically aren't there two facets to the same school of thought? I feel that republicans want tax breaks for their small businessmen but at the same time fight for this lack of net neutrality. If nothing else it proves they're lying about their priorities or can't think their way out of a paper bag

potentially. with a blacklist type system where certain sites are de-prioritized, sure, but not with a whitelist type system where only certain sites are given unrestricted access.

If there was no net nutrality, it would be a negative experience for everyone apart from the companies controlling the internet...
This would mean that they could do terrible things, for example if their infrastructure wasnt good enough, rather than upgrading it, they could just slow down websites that use a lot of bandwidth (which they would do), which would basically ruin a huge number of things, as well as decrease the overall speed of the internet, while also increasing prices (they would probably charge you more for 'unrestricted' internet access)

Welcome to planet Earth where if someone has a monopoly and they suck upkeeping it a smaller, smarter company will rise and take their price.

Take Uber as an example.

Competition in a market is always present and ensure a positive consumer experience. Most of the time this comes at an expense for those providing the service (actual workers/companies)
