WHAT IS CHEST QUEST?
I'm glad you asked!
Chest Quest is a turn-based adventure game with pixel graphics. It tries it's best to retain a simple pick-up-and-play mindset, yet includes advanced items and abilities to create a diverse experience. The player has to use the wonderful social skill called "teamwork" and battle all sorts of grotesque monsters.
The main point of the game is to travel as far as possible without dying. Along the way, players can open LOOT CHESTS and receive new items for their inventory!
Even though Chest Quest is a relatively simple game, there is an abundance of strategies the player may use to help them along the way. Happy battling!

SOUNDS GREAT! WHERE DO I SIGN UP?
Hold up, have you read the "HOW TO PLAY"? It is rather necessary if you want to join the game! Don't worry, I've shortened and revised it to the best of my ability, so you can read less and play more.

HOW TO PLAY
Welcome to the tutorial! I've organized all the information you need into two spoilers: Basic and Advanced.
The BASIC tutorial is what you definitely need to know in order to play accordingly. It is wise to read up on it. The ADVANCED tutorial is if you want to learn strategies and more complex aspects of the game. Don't worry, the ADVANCED tutorial is optional; you don't have to read it.
▼BASIC TUTORIAL
▼THE MAIN SCREEN
This is the level name. In this particular level, the players are in FOREST, STAGE 3.
That number represents the turn players are on. They are in TURN 5.
This is the player profile! I'll be as straightforward as possible.
-The PLAYER NAME is "MAN"
-The player is a ROGUE, as identified by his icon.
-The player has 3 HP, 1 / 2 MANA, 3 ATTACK, and 2 DEFENSE
-The player carries a T2 IRON DAGGER, T1 LEATHER PELT, and no ring.
-The player's SPECIAL ABILITY is a T2 SPIDER VENOM, and it will wear off in 1 TURN, as stated by the green dot next to the item icon
If your group has a SUMMONER he/she can summon minions to aid in battle. In this case, it is a SKELETON, and it's profile will show up to the left of the screen.
These are enemy profiles. Note that enemies do not have an "MP" stat!
Deceased enemies will show up in grey. Likewise for the players.
This is the battle map. Note that there are coordinates surrounding it to make move commands easier. IMPORTANT: YOU MUST FOLLOW THE (x,y) PATTERN, OR YOU MAY MESS UP YOUR MOVEMENT!
You see those purple lines that form a small plus sign? Yeah, those are AOEs, or "Area of Effect". Purple stands for POISON. Most AOEs last a few rounds, and many of them have status effects that affect players or enemies.
That is a grave, which marks a deceased enemy or player. Bosses get a larger and sexier grave, which you'll see sooner or later...or never. Graves only last for 1 round, and do not count as an obstacle.
▼CHOOSING A CLASS
Now that you're familiar with the map, time to choose a class! 9 CHARACTERS are at your disposal, and they'll try to persuade you to choose them!
---
Hello, I am the ROGUE! I throw POISONS at enemies and watch them slowly die. I can travel far in short periods of time, and my POISONS can even be used as traps! If you like what I do, please choose me!
---
Greetings, I am your faithful KNIGHT! If you adore high damage, high defense characters, I'm your best choice! My powerful SHIELDS increase my defense, turning me into an unstoppable machine! Not just that, my movement pattern is specifically made to charge at enemies, which is great fun!
---
Yes, yes, I am the all-powerful WIZARD. With my extraordinary intellect, I can blast foes with my SCROLLS. They cast absurdedly high damage, but I guess that makes up for my low defense. Also, I have the greatest attack range out of all the other characters. Pick me!
---
Salutations, my good friend! I am a MEDIC, here to heal! With my ORBS I can set healing AOEs to rejuvenate the mind and soul. I am mainly support, making sure everyone is alive and well. If you're fond of this sort of thing, don't wait; pick me, your trusty MEDIC!
---
Arr, mateys! I am a PIRATE! I don't actually speak Pirate-talk though, that was an advertising strategy. Anyhoo, I'm the greatest sniper of this crew. Armed with my CANNON, I can annihilate enemies from a safe distance! Did I also tell you I can attack from 3 squares away?
---
Rejoice, I am the SUMMONER, a practitioner of the dark arts. I can summon minions with my SPELL, ya' know? Great and powerful ones too. They're a great help, as I can attack enemies from far away. And technically I can control two players at once. Pretty neat, huh?
---
Hey there, I'm your friendly neighborhood HYPNOTIST, here to tell you something. Have you ever watched two elves fight each other to the death? Well, with my GLYPHS, you can do that, amongst other things. I can bring enemies under my spell, and command them to fight their allies. Once I turned a frog against it's own body, and the results were...actually pretty cool. But hey, I'm old, I'm smart, and I'm ready to rumble. Choose me already, for Pete's sake.
---
Namaste, little toad. I am a PSYCHIC. Watch me as I steal stats from enemies and convert them into energy. Watch me as I take that energy and use it to boost my own stats. I use a MIRROR to do all this, which is super cool. I can theoretically turn the most powerful being in the universe to a little baby sheep, all with my powers.
---
I AM THE GLADIATOR, FEAR ME! Actually, don't. I don't have many friends, and even worse if I tell you to avoid me...But alright, I am the almighty Gladiator, got a problem with that? I might just impale you with my SPEAR! You wanna know something cool? My spears are harbringers of pain and suffering. I can rush towards enemies and watch them turn into a gravestone, which I'm yet to understand the physics behind.
▼WHAT ARE STATS?
Stats are real simple, and I can tell you in less than 5 sentences.
RED stands for HEALTH POINTS, which is how much damage you can take before dying.
BLUE stands for MAGIC POINTS, and are what powers SPECIAL ABILITIES.
BROWN stands for ATTACK, which deals damage to enemies.
GREY stands for DEFENSE, which decreases damage taken.
▼ITEMS AND THEIR ROLES
Items are separated into 2 categories: Tiered and Special Tiered.
Tiered items are what you start with. They are upgradable, and the maximum tier is 20.
Special Tiered items are much more powerful and harder to get. They drop from bosses, and cannot be upgraded.
▼WEAPONS
WEAPONS are the main source of damage. The more powerful a weapon is, the more damage it deals. Some may even come with STAT BUFFS that don't affect attack, such MP and DEFENSE!
---
DAGGERS
Daggers are used by ROGUES, MEDICS, and PSYCHICS. They deal moderate damage, and can be considered the "normal" weapon besides SWORDS and STAVES.
---
SWORDS
Swords are used by KNIGHTS, PIRATES, and GLADIATORS. They deal the highest damage out of all weapons.
---
STAVES
Staves are used by WIZARDS, SUMMONERS, and HYPNOTISTS. They deal the lowest damage out of all weapons, but have much higher STAT BUFFS.
▼ARMORS
ARMORS give defense to the player, which reduces damage taken from enemies. They are especially important when you get further into the game.
---
PELTS
PELTS are worn by ROGUES, MEDICS, and PSYCHICS. They give moderate defense, as opposed to CHAINMAILS and ROBES.
---
CHAINMAILS
CHAINMAILS are worn by KNIGHTS, PIRATES, and GLADIATORS. They give very high defense, but lack in STAT BUFFS.
---
ROBES
ROBES are worn by WIZARDS, SUMMONERS, and HYPNOTISTS. They lack in great defense, but have many STAT BUFFS.
▼SPECIAL ABILITIES
Special abilities are what makes each character unique. Every character has it's own ability with it's own usage. Special abilities take Magic Points, so it's useful to have a good amount of it.
Special abilities have something called "Magic Count", which is how much magic it is needed to be used. Beware, however, all Special abilities have increased "Magic Counts" starting from T3, and it would be terrible if you had an ability that costs too much MP to use.
Another point to note is that Special abilities have a 1 turn cooldown. If the item lasts for a number of turns, you may use it again 1 turn after the final turn. There is an exception to the PSYCHIC, which has a 3 turn cooldown (to prevent abuse)
Now, it isn't necessary to read all of these. Just the ones that belong to your character.
---
POISONS [ROGUE]
POISONS deal poison damage to targets in a certain AOE. They follow an X DMG over Y TURNS scheme. Poisons can also be used as traps, luring an enemy into the poison AOE and damaging it.
---
SHIELDS [KNIGHT]
SHIELDS boost the player's defense for a certain amount of time. Higher tiered shields can also boost other players in a certain AOE as well, and some may even damage enemies!
---
SCROLLS [WIZARD]
SCROLLS deal damage to enemies in a certain AOE. The damage is very high, and pierces through defense.
---
ORBS [MEDIC]
ORBS heal X over Y turns. Higher level ORBS have a larger radius, which is useful if the player wants to move around and still be healed.
---
CANNONBALLS [PIRATE]
CANNONBALLS shoot straight into an enemy, dealing MASSIVE damage. Higher level cannonballs can stun enemies, rendering them unable to move or attack.
---
SPELLS [SUMMONER]
SPELLS summon minions to battle. Minions have their own movement and attack pattern, as well as health, attack, and defense. You may only spawn one minion at a time.
---
GLYPHS [HYPNOTIST]
GLYPHS hypnotize enemies and make them attack their own. It is incredibly powerful if used correctly. The status effect only lasts for a couple of turns, but more powerful GLYPHS last longer and can affect more enemies.
---
MIRRORS [PSYCHIC]
MIRRORS siphon stats from enemies and increases the player's own. It is useful, as it may potentially make a powerful enemy weaker, thus making the battle easier.
---
SPEARS [GLADIATOR]
SPEARS act similar to the CANNONBALL, but causes more damage. As well as higher attack, SPEARS make the player rush towards the target instead of attacking from a distance. Higher level SPEARS can DAZE the enemy, causing it unable to attack back.
▼SUBMITTING COMMANDS
Now that you're familiar with most of Chest Quest, it's time to learn how to submit correct commands!
To MOVE your character, look at the coordinates on the battle map and follow the (x,y) format (x across, y to the sky). You can simply say "go to A,D". Better yet, you can say "go up" or "move two steps to the right", which I personally think is easier.
To ATTACK an enemy, just type "attack <enemy>".
To USE A SPECIAL, say "use <special ability>", or better yet, "<special ability>". If your ability needs to land somewhere, such as POISONS or SCROLLS, say something along the lines of "use <special ability> on <target or coordinate>".
To USE A CONSUMABLE, take a look at how the item works first. Armed with common sense, submit it appropriately. If it's an item that heals, you can say "use <item>", or "use <item> on <player>".
To USE AN UPGRADE, say "upgrade <item>"
▼DEALING WITH ENEMIES
Enemies are terrible, terrible people, which is why you're fighting them.
Every world has it's own type of enemy. Villages have orcs, and the Forest has elves. Upon the 6th level of 1 world, there is a boss battle. Bosses take up 4 squares, and are extraordinarily powerful compared to the other enemies.
Enemies, as well as characters, have their own movement and attack ranges. They're given beforehand, and it is useful to know them in order for the battle to be easier.
And, obviously, enemies can kill! Be careful when battling!
▼BASIC DO'S AND DON'TS
DO:
Cooperate with team members
Read the "How to Play"
Submit commands on time
Contribute to the battle
Use items only in necessary situations, or upon agreement with other team members
DON'T:
Hog all the items to yourself
Go solo and avoid talking to the other players
Constantly miss the deadline for command submissions
Sit around and idle during battles (i.e. walk back and forth purposely to avoid battling anything)
Be completely unaware of the rules of the game
▼ADVANCED TUTORIAL
Had fun reading the BASIC TUTORIAL? Well, brace yourself, as the ADVANCED TUTORIAL will be a bit harder. Again, it's an optional read, but if you want to, feel free to begin!
▼COMMON PLAYING STRATEGIES
There are many strategies in Chest Quest, some which require teamwork in order to perform. I've given some examples, but there are many more strategies other than the following.
STANDARD STRATEGY
Offensive classes attack, defensive classes defend, support classes support.
MOB STRATEGY
Players get together and battle a single enemy at a time. This is the safest but slowest strategy. As many players target a single enemy, it is almost certain the enemy will die a quick death.
SOLO STRATEGY
Players are assigned to their own enemy. This is the quickest way to get rid of enemies, but poses a risk, as some classes are not designed to succeed with solo battles.
POISON TRAP STRATEGY
A team member leads enemies into a poison placed by a rogue. Some non-rogue special abilities may also be able to poison.
JUGGERNAUT STRATEGY
Main focus is the knight. All players must keep the knight alive by giving it heal or stat boosts. This makes the knight extremely overpowered, and nearly indestructible.
UPGRADED JUGGERNAUT STRATEGY
Quite different from the JUGGERNAUT STRATEGY, and requires extreme teamwork and cooperation. One player gets all the upgrades, getting incredibly strong as the levels progress. This makes a single player immensely strong, but all the others weak and fragile.
▼ADVANCED ITEMS
Do you remember when we talked about Special Tiered items? This spoiler will go more in-depth with it, also providing a walkthrough on understanding how one works.
ST ITEMS are highly sought after. Most of them are much more powerful than normal tiered items.
ST items are separate from the regular items because they have a much more complex system. Take a look at this ST Staff:
[ST] Flames of Muspelheim
+7 ATK
AOE: Small Square
Burns enemies for 3 turns by 2 DMG
When attacking, target is the AOE, can also attack multiple enemies
It's actually quite simple, so let's break it down.
We have the name, which is Flames of Muspelheim. We know it gives +7 ATK.
Now, instead of shooting in a straight line, it attacks in an AOE (Area of Effect) with a size called "Small Square", which is 3 by 3 tiles.
As well as attacking, it also does BURN damage, which is 2 DMG for 3 turns, or 6 total damage. Add that with the previous attack, we have 7+6, which is a total of 13 DMG.
Not just that, the item also states the AOE can attack multiple enemies at once!
And that's a more complex item; there are simple ones, like the Treasure Hammer:
[ST] Treasure Hammer
+10 ATK
+4 MP
+4 HP
▼STATUS EFFECTS
Status Effects are certain attributes applied to the player or enemy. They induce some sort of effect that either harms or aids in battle. Below is a list of all the status effects you may encounter in Chest Quest:
STUNNED
Target cannot MOVE or ATTACK
PARALYZED
Target cannot MOVE, but can ATTACK
DAZED
Target cannot ATTACK, but can MOVE
HYPNOTIZED
Target attacks allies
POISONED
Target is dealt X damage over Y turns
BURNING
Target is dealt X damage over Y turns and cannot ATTACK
FROZEN
Target cannot MOVE until they attack once (to break the ice)
▼STAT BALANCING & TEAMWORK
It is important to balance out your stats!
For example, a knight starts off with 3 DEF. Because of this, it's better to increase his other stats to give it balance.
Another example is the wizard, who carries high attack but starts with no defense. It would be smart to upgrade it's armor first.
The most fundamental aspect of Chest Quest is teamwork. Without teamwork, the band would quickly succumb to the sweet, sweet hands of death. Work with your teammates! Socialize! Plan out strategies! And there will definitely be disagreements, especially for giving out the upgrades, so compromises need to be made.
