Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Lag

For those who think this is another "I have lag" topic, you're wrong! This topic is to explain the concept of lag, for those who define it wrongly.

Lag is the delay between the action of a player and the server response. This is caused by either high latency or ping (the delay for the client to reach the server), or bad upload/download speed. This is all related to internet connection, and not to computer resources.

Let's consider you are playing a FPS game. If you have a 1-second ping (way much lag), you will see players tele-porting instead of moving as normally. and it will become an issue to shoot them. Enemy is at A. You shoot at A because on your client, you see that the enemy is at A. But on the server, enemy moved to B before you shoot. You end missing the shot because you shot at A when enemy was at B. This is lag.

Now, let's go to EE and join a world.
The players are tele-porting. Effects, keys and switches do not work properly. It takes about 3 or 4 seconds to send a message. Disconnected from worlds. - This is lag.
The client runs slow. Game crashes. - This is NOT lag.

The second case has nothing to do with internet connection, and has more to do with computer resources. These are known as game performance issues.
kfrYZ9t.gif
This is the most common and is called "Low frame rate", where the game gets stuck instead of running smoothly. This is caused by either poor computer resources that can't keep up with the game, or by the clearly know bad Flash environment, not by internet connection problems. Therefore, this is not lag.

If you want to report what you experience lag in the game, please consider reading this topic so you can understand and check if you have either lag or game performance issues (like the low frame rate)

I'm just as pedantic as OP regarding framerate vs lag terminology so I avoid being wrong by just complaining about EE running like crap all the time like why is this game so terribly optimized I can run overwatch on max quality better than I can this simple little flash game it's so ridiculous and often I'll just stop playing entirely because of how painful it is to control myself when it's running so poorly that half of my inputs aren't even registered is basically unplayable half the time especially when I open a specific world using a link like how weird is that why is this so terrible oh my god

Unity is not going to fix lag. Lag is something that will never, NEVER be fixed. It's about internet connection.

What if the Unity update makes file sizes smaller and optimizes server speeds?

That has nothing to do and is not going to change the latency (ping). If you have an high ping, then you will still have to deal with it.

Re: Lag

Lag is, according to google, "a period of time between one event or phenomenon and another."
It doesn't solely describe network latency issues, and also includes visual lag and input lag too.

Smitty didn't even mention lag or ping. He was referring to low framerate. If you're talking about ping because of his use of the word "All", it was a hyperbole (exaggeration).

I guess it can't keep up running Flash on a heavy website.

Lag is an increased time of I/O - so you have network lag and client lag.

Re: Lag

I can run Starcraft II on low settings in PlayOnLinux; surely I can run EE at the same frame rate (spoiler: no). My internet connection is the same for both; I think it has to do with the actual optimization of the game code.

Re: Lag

The lag you feature in your GIF is not normal lag. This type of lag has been going on since the beginning of the year (around April is when I first encountered it, near the same time that boost corner glitch and corner jumps were [mostly] fixed) . It only happens near action blocks - coin doors/gates, water, spikes, maybe portals. I'm fairly certain it's not a normal type of lag caused by PC performance or connection because it can be fixed by opening E.E. in a new tab while keeping your existing tab; going full-screen also works. The lag is worst when they're in large masses and the further away you get from them the lag improves. If I could guess, it was probably some sort of 'fix' they attempted on something else.

Re: Lag

So let me point a few things out here. Flash is very unoptimized and Everybody Edits itself is just not optimized at all. Flash is also getting outdated and us adding more things to the game makes it even laggier. The lag spikes you have here are very unusual, though. Even my old laptop with a single-core processor and integrated intel graphics can do it better //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/tongue. Anyhow, hopefully Unity will fix this (I'm almost certain it will).

I will probably also add an option to turn animations off and instead just show a static image.

Exactly, it's something I REALLY don't understand. And I believe it's a Chrome issue.
On both my terribly slow laptop and my very fast PC (specs here http://goo.gl/vay6eM ) everybody edits CONSTANTLY freezes up whenever I move. And this seems to be only on Chrome. Using Internet explorer, I get constant consistent 60fps (with moderate loading since it's IE or edge or whatever), while on the other end using Firefox gives me 60fps with no loading issues whatsoever.

I'm certain this has to do with Chrome pushing for getting rid of flash, as flash games run considerably slower on Chrome now. While I can see why they don't want it, as it is horribly unoptimized, it is a problem for people who want to play games now and go back to their old classic newground flash games to get the soothing feeling of nostalgia.

Just my thoughts //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/smile

Re: Lag

The version of flash that chrome uses is totally different from what at least Firefox uses. I'm not real clear on the details but Chrome's flash is supposedly newer and better and more secure.

Re: Lag

Here's a solution that worked for me very well (but still not perfect) on my Ubuntu/Debian system (for Debian you just log in as root first then drop the sudo part):

Run

sudo rmmod intel_powerclamp

in the terminal, and enter in your password when prompted. This will unload the intel_powerclamp kernel module for this boot only (it will automatically reload when you restart.) After a few seconds, you should see an immediate performance improvement. Intel_powerclamp is a module to reduce performance when on battery, reducing heat, giving you more battery life at the expense of performance.

I encourage you to read more about it before executing arbitrary commands in your terminal though.
