Might be hard to do in an efficient way. The forums don't actually know how many unread posts there are, it just knows that posts have been made in that topic since your last visit. Even when you hit the {New Posts] thing, it just looks up the oldest new post and sends you there.

Could you add another query that counts the number of posts in the topic including the oldest new post?
edit: I see. The request for the new post data is handled by the viewtopic, so I guess the "latest post" code could be quite convoluted... my idea's a piece of pie until you hit that objective.
