Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

So I calculated the apocalypse

Got bored while writing a paper on Dante's Inferno so I instead calculated the maximum volume of Hell given the data in the poem and then calculated how fast we fill it up. I figure once Hell is full the apocalypse must happen because then only believers can die.

Background: Dante and Virgil walk from the "forest" in Canto I, which is on the surface of the earth, to Cocytus in Canto 34 (the center of ring 9 in the pit of Hell) in exactly 24 hours. Also, the shape of hell is roughly conical due to the way Satan fell from Heaven and the land moved out of his way (also Canto 34).

1. Average speed of a human = 4 MPH
2. Hours in a day = 24 Hours
Therefore
3. Average distance that could be walked in one day = 96 mi
4. Hell is roughly conical.
5. Dante and Virgil go from the surface of Earth (base) to the center of Hell (vertex)
6. Volume of a cone is pi/3*h*r^2
7. Maximize the volume given h = 96cos(angle/2) and r = 96sin(angle/2)
Therefore
8. Answer (using calculator) maximum volume of hell is
    = 356607.46540 cubic miles
    = 1486404756100000 cubic meters
9. Average volume of a human is 0.0664 cubic meters
Therefore
10. Maximum amount of people in hell is 22,385,613,796,686,746.987951807228916 (22.3 quadrillion)
11. Estimate of the amount of people who have ever died = 107,000,000,000
12. Remaining space = 22,385,506,796,686,746.987951807228916
13. Amount in people in hell across a given time = death rate(t)*integral(now, end){birth rate(t)}

14. Average death rate of world is approx. 7.89 deaths per 1000 people per year
15. 0.00789*population(t) = deaths for that year
16. 0.00789*(7,125,000,000 + integral(start, end){birth rate=131,400,000}) = deaths from (start) until (end)

17. = 0.00789*(7,125,000,000 + 131,400,000t)
18. = 56,216,250 + 1,036,746t
Therefore, the time until hell will be completely full is
19. 22,385,506,796,686,746.987 = 56,216,250 + 1,036,746t
20. 21,592,084,021.034 years

or (spoiler)

Very liberal and inaccurate estimates but you get the idea. A while.

Yeah, well, you know that's just like, uh, your opinion, man.

have you been cookin the ganja

Maverick: Started up on a 6, when he pulled from the clouds, and then I moved in above him.
Charlie: Well, if you were directly above him, how could you see him?
Maverick: Because I was inverted.

I think humanity will be dead far, far before then, though.

So if all humans stop walking... does that mean the world will never end?

Well, We could just wait like 4-5 billion years for the sun to explode.

Yeah, but science's estimate is way off (or that's what I think) on the suns age, so we don't know when it will explode.

Actually the Sun isn't massive enough to explode as a supernova. In about 4/5 billion years it'll leave the main sequence and turn into a red giant, and will probably engulf the Earth completely. We'll probably be long gone before then though, but that's the cut off point for humanity on Earth.

Re: So I calculated the apocalypse

Of course, there's so many physics questions. (reminds me of this

When you cram that much meat into one spot, does it compress at all? Ok, so maybe it doesn't. What kind of existence would that be? Doesn't the body have some pressure limit before just KOing? After that, do those condemned just exist in nothing? (concerning spirit, of course)... I mean, there's some point where people cease being functioning (yet on fire?) units.

I feel like the volume issue is a valid one, but long before we meet that maximum, other issues would be raised.

Re: So I calculated the apocalypse

Ok so I used an exponential model for growth and came up with year 3391. Much more accurate.

If you have LaTeX installed then here is my post. Much easier to read. https://www.reddit.com/r/theydidthemath … s_inferno/

Re: So I calculated the apocalypse

39 upboats! nice!

Anyway, I always imagined myself that by 3391 humans will be already mostly gone from this Earth and moved on to another planet, maybe even past the Milky Way. Perhaps this Earth would become just a memorial of the old times, a reminder of who we were once. (or a slum.)
But I've never read Dante's inferno. I know this whole thread is just mental masturbation, but would we puny humans still be punished even if we were just chilling in Kelper-442b?

in a length of time like that anything could happen, we can't predict the future with exact precision
