Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

I'm glad to say that this is finally done!
I've got 3 different layouts here with small variations (straight/curved edges & node size). 16 .PDFs in total. They're sorted by layout below.
Download them to zoom in.
Click here to download all graphs at once.
42 people have submitted their friend lists.
There are 635 people on the graph (nodes) and 1641 connections (edges).
The whole graph is divided into 5 communities. Every node is assigned a colour that represents the community it belongs to.
Distribution:
Red — 45.83%
Yellow — 26.14%
Green — 14.65%
Blue — 10.71%
Purple — 2.68%
People of the same community are most likely to be friends.
Anyone can PM me and ask for the ID, with which you can locate yourself on the graph.
People who contributed to this project can request a personal map. It includes the names of your friends, and the nodes are coloured based off the distance. Example.
Alright, I guess that's it. If you have any questions or suggestions just reply to this thread!

Just think of any word and type it in. If you'd want to locate yourself on the graph later, when this is done, I will ask for this word and you will have to tell it to me. I'm doing this because I don't want to accidentally reveal others' names on the graph.
Nevermind, that was a stupid idea.

... That graph reminds me of a game so good job

Now that's useless.

This isn't really meant to have any serious purpose. If you're interested, go ahead, but if you are not, I'm not forcing you.

Good luck on this !

12 people so far, this is what it looks like:
I painted this one randomly. I will try to paint and rearrange the nodes in the final version so as to make it all more clear.
Again saying that the IDs in this and the final versions will be different, so it's no use asking what your number is right now.

I'll most likely create a few copies of the final graph, one of them with dead ends dropped. I don't think that will help much though, the mess is in the centre, where a lot of intersections are. That can be solved by extending the farthest nodes I guess.

This reminds me of the "6 degrees of separation" thing. Interesting work dull.

I was actually reading about that when I decided to do this. I wonder how many steps would also work here, 6 is too much for such a small community.

I don't know, but think about it: It's easier to be connected to someone across the state (small community) than across the entire country (big community).
And for those who don't know what "6 degrees of separation" is, I recommend this video:

Bump and progress update.
25 people.
I find this layout pretty clear. I'll still publish a few others too in the end.
The size of the node is mostly proportional to the amount of friends (10px—70px). I also divided it into 4 communities, which are shown by different colours of the nodes (not the edges, they inherit their colours from the source node). People of the same community are most likely to know each other. This is not very accurate yet, because there's not very much people so far, and also because I've got a lot of my friends to take part here, hence why the red community is the biggest so far. The distribution is as listed below:
Red — 55.42%
Yellow — 24.7%
Green — 11.45%
Blue — 8.43%
To make that more accurate, I need more people in. If there's something that you don't really like about contributing to this, just tell me and I'll try to change that if possible.
I would also appreciate anyone who invites their friend to participate.
I guess that's it for now. I need to define the deadline though, but I would also like to collect as more data as possible. I expect it to be in 1 or 2 months I think.
Thanks to everyone who has contributed to my project and a Happy New Year!

Will you make a way to identify yourself ?

Yes, I will, when it's all done. Every node will have an ID assigned to it, it will be published, and then I will personally send their ID to everyone who asks. I think I can also manage to highlight your friends, but it takes a bit more time so I will do that only for those who contributed to this.
how exactly do you determine communities?
It's a built-in feature. Thank maths. It references a book, Vincent D Blondel, Jean-Loup Guillaume, Renaud Lambiotte, Etienne Lefebvre, Fast unfolding of communities in large networks, in Journal of Statistical Mechanics: Theory and Experiment 2008 (10), P1000.
tl;dr Wikipedia.

If you want to drown in information,
there's a giant list of friend lists here!
I've thought about using that, but I've decided not to as 1) most of them are probably outdated already; 2) I'm not sure everyone wants to be a part of this project.

For those who don't want to spend time writing their friends list themselves, Jesse made an application so that you could do that within a few clicks. Download it for Windows here.
All you have to do is log in, press "Copy" and send it to me as PM.
EDIT: the app has been updated. The format of the text is now slightly different, it's now including semicolons. Do not delete them.
