Unless I'm mistaken - feel free to correct me - the current hazards fall in two categories: instant death (fire, spike) and seconds until death even if you move away (lava, curse, zombie).
My suggestion is to add a hazard that has seconds until death but the seconds increase (and the countdown even disappears) if you move away from the hazard.
For example because you are slowly freezing. If you stand on a cold block, next to it, or under it, seconds decrease. But if you then move away from the cold, the seconds increase until the countdown icon disappears entirely.
I think this would be a new experience and would allow for different kinds of levels. Plus, I think it's relatively easy to implement and it's compatible with EE's grid based gameplay.
Maybe standing next to fire or lava could instantly remove the countdown.
I have permanently left the game and forum.
EE is an entertaining game and I enjoyed playing it...
...but it's time for me to move on.
