Religion and moral?

So I was thinking earlier about how a lot of theists I've met during my life have claimed that you can't live morally without a god. I of course think this is wrong, and decided to compare a "good" atheist with a "good" theist. You can think that the theist pretty much act good for a personal winning; getting to heaven and to avoid hell. They live to please a god whom they fear so they'll get eternal pleasure instead of eternal punishment. It's bad that they base their good act on personal winning, rather than a genuine concern for your fellowman.

So, what is a good human? Is it someone who under threats and force and promises about rewards in the afterlife follows rules written in a book thousands of years ago? Or is it someone who by their own free will tries to be a helpful and good man and is free to evolve over time, completely untied by rules written in a society thousands of years ago with totally values than what we have today?

we need to keep religion off these forums. talking about religion never ends right. someone just says something and it becomes the thing that gives them 50 negative rep.

I dont know the answer. but i would like to say NO where in the bible does it say man goes to heavan, nor hell.

there is 3 words translated into hell, but they do not mean hell. so the bible says " man shall go to hell when he dies " ( or something like that ) but in hebrew it says " Man shall go to hades? " ( i think its hades, or its another word. ) and hades ( or the other word ) really means dirt / grave. so man goes to his grave when he dies.

Sorry if this dosint help. i just had to get it out.

^^. never talk about religion ; Atheists and Theists will get into a war, bad -rep will happen, and possible bans. I would think this should be locked.

Why shouldn't we talk about something so interesting and relevant to our world?

Noone is forcing anyone to write anything at all. You can just ignore the topic if you don't want to discuss it.

To this, I can only reply "so what"? If someone says something you don't like, you downvote it. You shouldn't really lock a topic just because people have conflicting opinions about it. Reputation is pretty stupid anyways, which is why I turned mine off.

As long as you don't break any rules, you shouldn't get bans at all. I don't really see this outcome at all, as it is very possible to have a decent/"civil" discussion about religion. Even though this topic was more intended to discuss moral rather than religion.

I will reply to Kaosslashers post as soon as I'm finished doing some IRL stuff.

It's possible, but a .1% chance. Most god believers would respond all they can to make atheists believe in god.
