I always thought there was something off about it. So I put it together, the way it was originally, in Photoshop and the result surprised me. Sorry about the black line and the unexactness.

You misinterpreted it. It stops at a certain are, but the bottom line of the "p" makes it look connected to the top of the other "p". This created a "b" illusion when two of the letters were put on top of each other.
