Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

tl;dr: I bend the gifs themselves. I haven't tried separating it yet, but it would probably get more colorful and bent results.
I first tried bending gifs today. The first attempt was opening the gif in wordpad, and that broke it. Then I tried replacing things in a hex editor, and that broke it because I messed the header up. Then I separated all the frames, was about to bend them one by one, then my error occurred to me and I went back with the hex editor and got the above. Audacity partially broke the gif. It plays through a few bent frames before stopping.
EDIT: Original gif

I'm working out some new techniques, my ultimate goal for the moment being this:
EYE-SEARING AWESOMENESS ALERT
PNG bending. Most of the time, when you bend PNGs, the file doesn't bend far before it breaks.
<this part is broken.
I'm trying different things to get PNGs to "smear" like that instead of breaking in half.

I bent some clouds.

I didn't manage to get any good PNG bends on this try, but the one above turned out nice.

HA! This one looks so weird too and the clouds are funny.
The random pixels below (as seen in the dark circle) reminds me of EE
http://i46.tinypic.com/b6pt84.jpg
In the red circle, are the pixels retransforming into the basic RGB of an image and they are dragged horizontaly across the rest of the image, morphing and creating negative pixels? kinda weird.
Not sure what those are doing there. That one... was a TIF I bent in Audacity. I didn't apply any filters or anything, I just cut and paste bits of the photo.

That's nice pictures you got there, D55.
Thanks, HF.
I found a hex editor I can use on my PSP so I can databend wherever I go. I'll upload the stuff I've made so far later when there's more of it.

I can't find the cord for my PSP, so here's a cat I bent on a PC with GIMP, Audacity, HxD, and WordPad.

Also, I asked stAllio! (the databending wizard who created the smeared PNG I posted earlier) some questions about PNG bending on tumblr, I got an answer, and since then I've successfully smeared some PNGs:

Could you bend a fish? I like fish.

fish
(NOTE to mods/admins and users: different55 gave me permission to gravedig)
So, I can databend pictures too! If you post them, I can screw around with them. Also, you can have an optional effect, I'll try my best.

Bobithan's beautiful bends inspired me to play around a bit more with this. I saw this video earlier today and I picked out a frame and decided that I wanted to bend it. I moved 3 bytes in a hex editor and got this:
It was nice and glitchy, but I wasn't really happy with this since you couldn't see the creepy eyes staring out at you, so I blended it with the original frame in GIMP:
I also decided to play around with glitching the whole video. For the most part I guess it was a failure. I saved it as a raw video file (it's a 3 minute video and it takes up 1.5GB as just raw data, and that's after I resized the video to 50%. The full-sized thing would have been around 5GB for each copy of the raw video.) and copied chunks of data around with audacity. I would have tried some filters, but the amount of time it took even for simple cut/pastes kind of discouraged me from trying. Unfortunately, the raw video seemed to handle frames and colors being split in random places pretty well. I only got 1 good glitched frame out of ~4500:
And here's the single frame all by itself:
Well, that's it for me for today. Looks like I forgot to... normalize(?) a few of my glitched PNGs up above so I'll need to fix that some day. They're just PSN logos though, and most of them aren't much to look at.
First post has been updated with spoilers and such.

I saved that first page with the databending tutorial on Wayback Machine jsut in case I want to find it again lmao
These are very interesting! Might try it sometime

Console glitches = best glitches.
I wonder if I could bend a ROM without breaking it. Sounds like a good next project.
Also, here is a narwhal:
Source
I tried a hex editor and a PNG but all that did was turn the ocean (just the ocean) green instead of blue, so I converted that into a BMP and wordpadded it:
Kinda cool looking but it wasn't really narwhal-y so I found another picture of a narwhal and tried again.
Started out by clipping out a piece of its horntuskthing and wordpadding that, then putting it back:
and then I decided to do a little more to it as a PNG with a hex editor:
And then blending the two in GIMP gave me these.

Glitched gif of an umbrella that Towel posted in the IRC yesterday. All done with a hex editor. I started with mixing up the color index a bit to get it all colorful, and then started overwriting and moving random bytes in the image info itself which made it glitchy.
