If the editor puts a trigger on any solid block, then an options popup (like that of the portal) should show up. Some options would be the type of trigger, delay (optional), effect, and links. Also, there should be a checkbox that decides if all linked triggers have to be... well, triggered simultaneously, for the effect.
Some of the trigger types would be "Stand" (You must stand there for DELAY seconds for effect), "Touch", and "Jump On". Many effects would be listed, like "Spring" (Propel the user in a direction), "Unlock door for N seconds" (this spawns a new option for how many seconds), and "Give N coins" (Spawns new option for how many coins).
Finally, the trigger will affect all players who trigger it. So if Guest-1 and Guest-2 trigger a Multi trigger, then the gate will open for them, but not for Guest-3.
