Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Chat ideas

Looking at the latest poll on the   blog, it seems that what people really want is Chat. So as always, this is your chance to influence how it should look.

As always I will not copy the layout from any of your suggestions but the community generally have good ideas so show them to me.

Re: Chat ideas

I figured that we should have one Global chat channel in the lobby and individual chatrooms per level.

A tab in the upper-right corner (for example) could bring up a separate window that allows you to adjust size, pick chat rooms and minimze it back to the corner whenever you wish.

I can come up with illustrations once I get home though. //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/smile

Re: Chat ideas

What RPG said sounds great. Maybe a combination of that and something like this (by iYam)98816997.jpg
? The chat bubbles should be transparent and should be able to be turned off.

Re: Chat ideas

The post above me chris, do that.
If we have just 1 big chat box people will spam it so badly and people will feel awkward and unable to talk while others are talking.
So yes i'm all for the the idea above.

Re: Chat ideas

Thus from time to time you should be able to shout "HELP ME I'M STUCK HERE" Which would be visible for everyone.
And I wait for that block which shows a text message when touched //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/big_smile

Re: Chat ideas

Perhaps a chat for everyone, a chat for the room, and, if we get a way to login and make clans/crews, a way to communicate with a clan/crew member or all of them. Im all for the muting bubbles and keeping them on. Thanks for reading.

Re: Chat ideas

Would be nice with chat bubbles, but good if the owner of the chat can activate or deactivate them.
Here is some idea i got for the chat, http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/4879/chat4t.png
It add timestamp, smiley and text. But maybe a crap idea.

Modes for anti-spam, anti-flood, and disable/enable links.
Then ban or kick peoples from the room.
Chatbubbles (Enable / Disable)
Anti-spam (Enable / Disable)
Anti-flood (Enable / Disable)
Links (Enable / Disable)
Ban & Kick peoples

Re: Chat ideas

lillsneppe's idea is nice and would be better if it is going to be transparent, to avoid confusions in the game..
Chat box idea is good but there will be a lot of spam so there should be a warning like blocked for seconds/minutes..

Re: Chat ideas

I say we combine both ideas; there could be a tab at the side of the page that you can click to pull out the chat window and chat. Chat bubbles (semi-transparent) will also appear for people who send messages in your immediate vicinity (whatever you can see); you can disable them if you'd like. So if you type a message, it displays it on the chat window and a chat bubble. The chat tab will turn a slightly different color when there are 'unread messages'

You would be only allowed to post one chat message per 3 or 5 seconds to prevent spamming; the owner/root editor of the level can disable the chat completely and mute people, while normal editors can only mute people.

Chat would only be available for people with a registered account (beta or not). You can ignore people (you cannot see any of their messages). This allows for a private chat feature too.

Re: Chat ideas

Without having alot of windows you could add the "whisper feature" and use the colors of MMORPG-Chats. Like whispering is green and that stuff.

How about chat in the menu (lobby) as well?

There's really no point for that. It should be just room chat.

There is a point to it. It would be an area to discuss the game and would be quciker to talk to people than on the forums. I've seens loads of games where something as simple as this made the game better.

I wasn't able to make a good speech bubble, but this is my idea of a chat on the screen. When you click on the user list, it will give you a list of users in the chat.

Re: Chat ideas

I propose to reduce strain on the server to link it to IRC channels that get created on a per-room basis. Benefit of IRC being that it's much less work to implement, little to no strain on the main server (if you purchase a cheap shell for the sole purpose of running IRC), and built-in functions for chat control, nick changing and everything else. Downside being that it would be difficult to moderate chat or if you wanted to put personal features in.

I also suggest somewhat of a translucent window that disappears as you're done typing. No chat bubbles; chat bubbles are always ugly and would take away from the eloquence of EE's UI. I'm thinking of having a normal textbox to type in, while the chat window can be expanded/collapsed if it's bothering you.

Here's a mockup of what I'm thinking:

Fully expanded chat:

Collapsed chat:

They should have scroll bars to see previous chat, but I didn't include those. I just wanted to get in a rough sketch.

Re: Chat ideas

Mabyee the chat bubbles could be optional weather you see them or not, but there is still a chat window.

Re: Chat ideas

I think there should be a global chat, like in the lobby. Then each one individual for each room. But no chat bubbles, please! It will just look messy and if you are alone and stuck, there is nobody nearby who can help you.
Also, sending a little PM to a specific user, like:
apple: @admin Can I have the code?
admin: @apple Yes, it is 3964.
And a disable/enable button and an expander to make it bigger.

Re: Chat ideas

First of all, I think tinychat works fine, but if the chat is coming anyway, here is what I would like to see:

Chat bubbles + big chat box on the side:
Especially with the ability to turn the bubbles on/off. Otherwise it will take over the whole screen. The chat box also needs to be really big. If you have 45 people spamming on a 3 line chat, you won't be able to read anything. And on the side so it doesn't interfere with the game.

Moderation/registration:
I would like this to be done by a third party i.e. some assigned chatmods who can be summoned. We've seen what trolls and people do to levels in the state of power, they will do the same to the chat.
People must register in order to chat, otherwise moderation has no point. In really bad cases ( for example racial slur ) they could also have their access to EE disabled completely.

Chat colours/coloured names
Not much to say about it. People can choose their own chat colour, and only editors/room owners get a special coloured name so there is no chance of faking.

Private chat function
Speaks for itself.

Re: Chat ideas

I like insuevi's idea very much. It's one of the most used way in MMORPG games which are online and is a good idea in EE too. As most people should know there are comments to whisper or talk to a group or anything else ( / # ? ! )
Why not using that too? Simple, fast, small, and helpful.

Would guests be able to chat too? Named "Guest1","Guest2" and so on.
Just wondering.

I think that would be only fair but registering doesn't take such a long amount of time.

I don't agree with this - I think colors in general should serve different functions, just like on most MMOs.

For example, white would be regular chat, green would be whispering, light brown could be for friends (if friend lists are possibly implemented), purple would be for crews (again, if possible) and special colors like blue would be reserved for code-holders and room creators. Official admins and moderators could have uh... rainbow colored chat.
