     not specifically, no.
>do you laugh when other people laugh?
     yes
>do you think its good to laugh?
     yea
>do you like to laugh?
     for sure
>do we need a goverments?
We absolutely need some form of government for complex society. The need for governments-plural- is an interesting question, if their was a single world government would it's corruption prove unfixable? Or does having multiple states hold us bac?
>do we need money?
I think we will always need some way to measure value of goods unless we become an immaterial or post-scarcity society, and even in those hypothetical societies I feel some sort of currency will still arise, perhaps as a form of reputation.
>how would you think the world would be better with out what? and how?
I guess this is pretty generic but stupid people. More seriously anti-intellectualism, people being against the scientifically provable, having a disregard for education etc. Capitalism is also a problem and the world could do better without it, though that's not really a debate I'm looking to have today. One example though ties into the other part of my answer- capitalist motives causes distrust in science and many other things, removing this profit directive will help with trust in science //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/cool

the way I see it mankind is reaching a crossroads with AI and automation, soon we will have the technology to turn earth into a paradise for all alive. However climate change, over population, totalitarianism, nuclear war, etc threaten this paradise. Philosophies about human value will have to change as the vast majority of workers will become replaced by machinery, people who aren't extremely highly educated won't have much value in the job market so if we don't restructure our economy the world could be in serious trouble. long story short we either become star trek or mad max

I usually vote democrat with the more progressive side of the party.

That said I think  possibly the most important issue is election reform. We need to abolish the electoral college, enact score voting and enable a party list for the house. Mandatory election day holiday(perhaps make it a sunday), vote by mail in all 50 states, and automatic registration to vote when 18. Regulations on media to be facts based and less biased. I could go on and on lol.

I don't really think any party in the united states really closely resembles my views, I greatly agree with the pirate party of iceland and democratic socialism in general.

#4 Re: Debates » Should the bible be labelled as fantasy/science fiction? » 2018-06-10 21:05:25

I think the right section should be somewhere between philosophy and self-help sections.

Religion is what stops stupid, violent people from ruining the world. Sometimes it backfires but I think it has value in general. When any religious institution has too much power the wrong kinda people become attracted to those institutions, but I feel that can be said about any institution with too much power.

I'ma ramble about my religion/spirituality for a bit, so feel free to ignore the rest if that bores you. Sorry if the writing gets a little clumsy, I tend to get over-exited when I write about this stuff. I'm ignostic. This basically means "god" is very complicated concept that means different things to different people, and in general that debating about the existence of god is pointless. But what does exist is the idea of god. Some people fear god's punishment(heaven/hell, karma for example) and that leads them to do good deeds.
I truly believe one of the most unique aspects that separate humans from animals is the ability to create metaphors. Language is a metaphor. The actuality of the entire universe is simply beyond what the human mind can process, so in an attempt to understand(and stop existential dread) humans have created many metaphors for what the hell is going on in this world.
While I am a believer in science before anything else, I believe the universe is god. Just going from an abrhamaic point of view God is omnipresent:the universe is everything. god is all knowing: the universe contains and is made up of all things that know, therefore all knowledge had, is had by the universe. god is inside of us: we are not separate from the universe, we are a living part of it. Life(and humanity) are gifts of the universe(and therefor god) because the laws of physics(god) made it possible here on earth. From the first cell to now life is a legacy that we are apart of(god connects us). The legacy of life is evolving complexity and understanding. Once humans evolved we gained the ability of language which allows us to pass understanding from one to another. Writing allowed us to store information without what our minds are capable of, and now computers boost our ability to understand and remember more every day. The story of humanity beginning with the very first single-cell organism has been the universe(god) trying to understand more about itself.

You can think of god as the universe, big and all-encompassing. The holy spirit can be life itself, the fact that all things are related and well, alive. Jesus is humanity, life today in 2018 is easier because of the sacrifices made by our ancestors. All the major conflicts and discoveries of history have given us a world nicer than the world of the past. and even today people are working hard at new technology that people will take for granted in 100 years. At the end of the day I think almost all religion boils down to "there is a big picture than your individual life".

I say all this because while I disagree with serious religious people in many ways I find the fact that they understand there is something bigger than us as a way to connect to them. I cannot tolerate those whose religion justifies actions bad for humanity or life. The "fix" for these toxic people is not poking fun at them though, they clearly have some form of convictions that can be appealed to, even if they have lost a lot of reason/logic.

if a person believes A, then it is true that their opinion is A.

yes, that was never a question.

You claim opinions can't be wrong, because people have them.

No, I claim opinions can't be wrong because that's what an opinion is. If someone believes something something that is objectively false they are simply wrong, they do not have an objectively wrong opinion. Opinions can be morally wrong but morals are subjective.

#7 Re: Debates » Random LGBT+ debates 'n stuff » 2018-06-07 04:12:41

lex

also you claimed there is no such thing as objective right or wrong.  So if we use that logic, you are neither right or wrong, it's just your opinion.  and so you can't logically disagree with me, as I would also be neither right or wrong.  And then there is no point in arguing whatsoever, as everything is an opinion and facts do not exist.  But that doesn't make sense.  Objectivity must exist then.

beliefs and opinions are not the same thing. factual knowledge is neither of those things. moral right and wrong is yet another concept all together.

I believe people are good. It is my opinion that socialism is economical superior. I know for a fact that Justin Trudeau is the prime minister of canada. (In my culture)It is right to say thank you and wrong to murder.

I'm really not gonna reply anymore because your logic hurts my head there. Opinions and facts are not the same thing. Opinions being subjective is not an opinion. It is the definition of an opinion. When you scientifically prove something that people have opinions on it becomes a fact/false. I really do not want to explain the basics of epistemology right now.

#8 Re: Debates » Random LGBT+ debates 'n stuff » 2018-06-07 03:27:39

if opinions are always subjective.  which they can be objective.

You have provided no real evidence of this, if something is objective it is no longer an opinion.

people believe the world is flat, there is scientific evidence it is not. these people do not have objectively false opinions, they simply believe something objectively false. you can disagree with evidence for something, but that's a belief not an opinion.

the difference in those examples is necessary vs unnecessary actions.  Self defense is necessary, stealing to keep from starving can be necessary if no other option is available, but committing genocide is not necessary.  Even with their twisted beliefs, it was not necessary.  And to insist something must be done when it's not, is wrong.

and even if genocide is subjectively wrong, i really don't think it's appropriate to argue whether it is or not.  it's like if someone said "Rape/murder is wrong," and then someone countering "Well actually..." just no.  no thank you.  no.

I'm going to have to fully disagree with your second point. If we label a topic as something that cannot be discussed you are creating a massive problem down the road. Society and concepts change over time, we need to be able to talk about and understand the moral implications of even the most difficult topics.

I think we should drop the hitler talk too, but you never really baked up your point that "opinions can be objective".

Gotta point out that you did a really weird logic loop.

IanJanes: opinions can be wrong
mrjawapa: opinions are subjective
azurepudding : hitler had objectively wrong ideas
many people now: opinions are subjective, even hitler's
azurepudding: well we shouldn't talk about hitler...

i can't believe people are actually defending hitler and so i'll save myself some time here as arguing for the sake of arguing is annoying

that doesn't explain anything.  it was claimed opinions can't be wrong, i listed an example of a wrong opinion.  how is that apples to oranges? it's more like you claimed apples are always red but i countered with an apple that is green or yellow.  a yellow/green apple is not an orange, it's an apple.

I don't think anyone is defending hitler directly. The argument you are trying to make is that there are some objective opinions saying hitler being evil is an example of an objective opinion.

The thing is there is no such thing as objective right and wrong. Humans certainly have some form of morals hardwired into us but they are relatively flexible. I am a pacifist but I would kill in self defense. An honest man would steal if that was the only way he could eat. Society shapes and codifies our morals through social norms and laws. While Hitler's opinions are more or less 100% unacceptable in our society today, he was almost successful. We have no evidence that what he was trying to achieve wouldn't "work" for the people who got to stay in his territory. There are many(crazy) people today who advocate for a "white nation", they truly believe that if they had a country free to themselves they could create a utopia.

See to people who disagree with hitler like you and me his actions are barbaric, but to people who believe in a "white nation"(or in his time a unified germany) it was a sacrifice that had to be made for prosperity of his people.

While it's hard to say the end justifies the means to something you disagree with, the history of any powerful country in the world will show you that the road to prosperity is usually through the destruction of another people.

To end let me just say that I am a jewish, gay disabled, and a socialist. I would have been killed 4 times over in nazi germany. I do not agree with anything hitler did. The more I learn about the world the more I think the way for humanity to prosper is to remove the things that divide us rather than divide ourselves. I just wanted to post this because you seem to be misunderstanding the point the other guy was trying to make.

#11 Re: Debates » Apple is a terrible company, why or why not? » 2018-06-05 22:50:26

I think apple does do some shady stuff in terms of paying taxes and planned obsolescence. There is no ethical consumption under capitalism, and utilizing these dirty methods is how you "win" in the business world. Steve jobs was kind of a jerk but so are most "geniuses".

You are right about not being revolutionary, apple has always been a marketing company first. They take a good device that is somewhat obscure and polish it up for the masses and make bank. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, the iphone generated competition that helped kickstart a lot of growth with smartphones.

I'm not a big fan of apple products personally as I really like customization settings that I feel are counter to apple's design philosophy.

Hey guys, here's a topic to discuss TV and movies that have been on our minds recently! Try to keep spoilers hidden whenever possible as this should be a thread people can look to for ideas on what to watch!

I just finished both Community and Brooklyn 99, which are both really funny sitcoms! I would recommend both of them to just about anybody. I also recently watched the movie Arrival and it's definitely one of my favorite movies ever, worth a watch if you like spec-fic.

But their are like only two sexuality's, gay and straight. Nothing less, nothing more. No, **** dogs isn't a sexuality, it's just a weird religion or some other stuff. But back to what I was saying, I think dedicating an entire month to pride is just dumb, no good really. If we are "celebrating" things like that, or months like black history month why can't we have white history month or white straight male month? Seriously?! Having the month defeats the purpose of itself when if you aren't gay you are shunned, it just doesn't make sense. Can we just toss all the sjw's into a mosh pit, they would kill each other saying who was right and who was wrong. No one today can agree, and yes sometimes opinions are wrong.

This is a bit of a confusing post to me. Bisexualty exists for one, but also as our ideas of gender change we may need new terms for sexuality to describe them. If you do not identify as a male or female then terms like straight and gay literally make zero sense when describing yourself.

As for the existence of pride month. As people become more accepting the main purpose of pride is more and more unnecessary. HOWEVER we still live in a world where LGBTQ people are second class citizens. Sexuality is not a protected class in the united states the way gender/race/disability are. Many Lgbtq teens still grow up being ashamed of who they are because bullying still happens. I have personally been passed up for promotions at jobs because I am a gay man. The reality is that while gay people are "main stream", a lot of lgbtq folks grow up feeling ashamed of who they are and pride exists to tell them that they are valid and that they belong. Even as we are more accepted pride exists to remind us where we came from, and what we have overcome.

I know your SJW point at the end is a bit of a hyperbole, but it seems pretty sad that you like the idea of killing anyone with an overzealous knack for justice. Some SJW are a bit heavy handed with their tactics and word choice(and a handful are just really bad at conveying a point), but at the end of the day they believe in a more just world, and is that really a bad thing?
