Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Should banned forum users be able to watch the forum as guest?

I mean, you can just log out, so just let them see the forums.

Moved to Forum Discussion. This is not an issue of moderation.

Re: Should banned forum users be able to watch the forum as guest?

Ruins the point of the punishment honestly. Why allow people to use a main function of the forums if they can't follow simple rules and wait out the time given for breaking them?

If you break the rules you shouldn't have the privilege of access.

Re: Should banned forum users be able to watch the forum as guest?

Perhaps. One thing of note: the current system is intermediate; because guest access is allowed, actually answering this question should examine whether we should let all banned users view, or block even the banned users' guest access.

That is, there's no sense saying "banned users shouldn't be able to view the forums" without also calling for the removal of banned users' guest access by some means.

Personally, I can see this going both ways.

It's a suggestion, it's not for me to decide. That's up to you guys. Ofc sometimes I veto things but this isn't one of those times so I didn't say anything.

Re: Should banned forum users be able to watch the forum as guest?

What exactly is the main purpose of banning users?

As I see it, its uses could be
- Incentive not to violate the rules
- Punishment to rule breakers
- A way to temporarily remove disruptive elements

As incentive not to violate the rules, allowing banned users to view the forums reduces the incentive. However, given the ease of viewing the forums anyways, it's not all that large of a change. The difference could be increased, however, by potential alteration to the forums.

I don't believe punishment is all that good of a use for banning, as the goal of the forums should be to keep the forums themselves at the highest quality. Punishment, in and of itself, is not really a useful goal for the moderators to be pursuing. So, I don't think a change in the level of punishment matters.

Temporarily removing disruptive elements would also be an important purpose of banning. The effect of this possible change here is not immediately clear. Since it would still not allow direct interaction with the forum, allowing banned users to view the forums seems like it would not bring disruption back to them. However, banned users reading what is on the forums may make them more likely to bypass their ban in an attempt to interact with the forums than they would be if they did not know what was going on. Of course, both of these effects are again mitigated by the ease of viewing the forums even while banned.

Yes, as long as they can't post. They can't hurt anyone.

Which is why, if you wanted to make any change, it'd be to let banned users view since circumvention is so easy

Re: Should banned forum users be able to watch the forum as guest?

I could make it less easy. Like making all warning system bans be IP bans. Then just going incognito wouldn't work. Still easy enough to get around though.

No point in changing anything, I think it's fine how it is now.

The alternative would be that banned players would be automatically logged out, and could not log in while they are banned.

^ I mean when i click the LOGOUT Button, it doesn't work for me, but for others it does.

Give me a really good reason to do this?

You can just clear your cookies so you aren't logged in on the banned account and browse that way, or just use a VPN to bypass IP bans, so it doesn't matter either way.
