Someone wanted to boast their unnecessary html/css skills and magically crop the bg. (Rather than save on bandwidth/storage by simply taking what you need)
Or maybe they do expect users to play using 32kx32k px screens.
I mean, I've seen really wide screens. but not so many really square ones.
