Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

From my limited view on this:
The Friends system uses a method of validating the person via visiting a special link,
the link contains a unique hash, the .SWF object in the page uses the hash to see which person
is being added.
When you login to EE afterwards, it sends data to the server of the request, and a dialog
within the Friendslist allows you to accept the request or decline it.
For obtaining the link, you can send it to a temporary email address, it doesn't neccessarily
have to be sent anywhere specific, all that matters is the URL.
The hashes do expire, though. I think it's within a week-span.

So do you have to relog?
Not exactly, from a technical point of view it wouldn't be necessary at all.
The new friends data request is sent upon joining the lobby.
